My daughter and I will soon be moving to a half-double in Old North. Can anyone recommend a good renter's insurance agent? Part of the reason I am moving is because our house was burglarized earlier this month. I would like to get renter's insurance for the new place, but don't know the legitimate agents from the fly-by-night ones. (And renting so close to the university, I am sure there are many scam artists selling renter's insurance that is no good.)

I've used american family for renters, it was cheap, I think like 15/mo. I use them now for my home insurance and they are great with helping get stuff covered when my home was damaged. there will be a different price for replacement and full value on items. state farm is good, I've had car insurance through them since I was 16. just go with one of the big companies and you should be fine. there is a state farm agent across from Lavish at Tulane and High. it is nice to have your agent close in case you need to sign papers and stuff.
the problem with american family insurance is that I've been through about 5 different agents since I started with them. the agents seem to always be moving around. the agents change but the policy stays the same. with state farm i am on my 2nd agent only because the first one retired.

@Lifeliberty: The property itself--insurance there is my landlord's responsibility, right? Renter's insurance would cover my personal property (computers, TVs, etc.) Am I correct in that?

some renters insurance also covers liability to damage done to the property you would be liable for. Protects you if your landlord sues you for accidently burning the place down or whatnot.

Thanks for everyone's help. I've been doing a lot of Monday morning quarterbacking about this. It's especially galling when I'll be making payments for three more months on a computer I will probably never see again!

If you're eligible, USAA is fantastic. We have them for car and renter's insurance. Not sure how it breaks down, but I think our insurance is around $100/month for both.

I went to State Farm's Website and filled out a form online--the payment would be $200/year. I didn't commit to anything. An agent in Grandview will be touching base with me via return email.

Is there a site or agency analogous to Progressive Car Insurance (with or without Flo), where they will give three competitive quotes?

United Services Automobile Association
In 2008, USAA expanded membership eligibility to all military personnel and retirees, and all veterans who separated after 1996. In November 2009, USAA expanded eligibility requirements to offer coverage to anyone who has ever served honorably in the US Military.

I'm glad I asked before I made any inquiries. I'm not a veteran, so I wouldn't be eligible.
