Is there a bum convention in town or something?
Id blame it on the recession, bit these guys all seem like long-time pros, not I just-got-laid-off types.

Is it just me, or are there way more bums around the shorth north this summer?

I wonder - they evicted a pretty sizable camp down by the river (and yes, that song is now in my head), as part of building that bridge that can be seen from 670E before Grandview Rd. I used to folks with shopping carts or elaborate rigs on McKinley or nearby all the time, regardless of the weather (I drive that way nearly every day), and I haven't seen hardly anyone roaming around.
I also think the homeless folks have gotten more bold - the cops are busy with real crime, and can't be bothered with hauling those guys in, when they are back out on the streets in an hour.

It comes in waves, though there's been an uptick in alley defecation lately. Some of them actually live in the section eight housing at the north end.
One of them got rundown crossing the street the other day, I didn't see who was truly at fault, but there's been a lot of drunken jaywalking as of late too.

A.Ill be sure to send them over to the circles - great camping spots over there...
We get 'em. A little far off the main drag tho. I did nicely roust a couple who had a mattress outside the office the other morning.

Im not in the Short North all the time, but I think there has been an increase in the homeless population everywhere, in every city. It has become more prevalent to see homeless people sitting and standing off exits in the suburbs now too. And even out in Newark and Granville I have noticed an increase as well.
I think a lot of this is in response to the economic downturn. It makes sense.Posted 1 year ago # -

Strange. Tomorrow morning Im going to go buy a 40 and drink it on their stoop so they know how it feels.

You've never seen them pull down the fire escape to get in the back of the building at fifth and high? I'm guessing they just dislike being cooped up.
There's also a flop house on fourth that's draws some. Of course the plastic chairs that are lashed to the side of goody boy now give them a nice place to get out of the heat in the afternoon.
I had a woman kick me in the leg the other week because I didn't give her a cigarette (not that I had one).

The camps are still alive and well. I don't mind homeless peoples I find when I get to having discussions with some we get along better then normal people and I do. lol
There is a difference between homeless and a money bum. I dislike money bums and wall shitters.Posted 1 year ago # -
It's a big epidemic. Not only that, it's a problem, because they are pretty much everywhere near Downtown, Campus, and the Short North, as well as Main Street, to name a few places. It sometimes makes me uncomfortable, but I'm prone to it.

I noticed a 'party' at the elementary school @ 5th & highland the other day. Lots of 40s and shopping bags.

I have noticed a few people who ask for money at the highway exits getting tickets this summer. That always makes me chuckle a bit.

Yeah - apparently run-of-the-mill panhandlers get tickets.
But if, like yesterday, you're a firefighter standing in the middle of a street or intersection with a boot in hand to solicit money, you're OK.
I don't see any real difference between the two.

usually the fire fighters are collecting for a cause other then 40's and crack.

There is a disconnect in this thread that is odd, as if you were discussing the number of Canadian geese on the neighborhood pond.
You do understand that the number of homeless you are seeing is a direct result of 30 years of Republican "survival of the fittest" policy?
And that it takes years of unemployment and burning through family and friends before people end up on the street? So the people that have lost jobs in the current downturn are mostly still hanging on by their fingernails, but probably will end on the streets unless some big changes are made.
Don't know if those changes are possible with all the screeching about "socialism" from the right, I have a feeling this is just the start of a new wave of homeless.

Rus, you probably weren't born yet but I remember during the Reagan years most of the Public Mental Health Homes were shut down and the folks were tossed out on to the street.

This was actually a topic of discussion at the SNBA (Short North Business Association) meeting this week. A lot of the merchants were commenting on the increase in the number of homeless, panhandlers and agressive panhandling that they see going on. Officer Steve (the neighborhood liason officer) said that due to the redistricting, the number of officers working the Short North had been reduced and he said that people are testing the thresholds of the new system to see what they could get away with. He also said there was a HUGE uptick in car break-in's last month as well.
