The post about the Ohio Hub got me thinking about trains and flying in general.
I hear a lot of people push for mass transit in terms of train travel between cities and at the same time somewhat demonize flying. Is flying not mass transit?
Perhaps you could argue that from Columbus to Cleveland makes sense on a train because it might be faster, but from here to Chicago I would much rather fly and save the 3+ hours (including security checks).
All things being equal I think flying is preferred because you don't have tracks cutting communities in half (just like freeways do), you can change routes and destinations easily as citys grow/shrink, and you only have to keep two points secure instead of the entire line.
I just don't really see the point of city-to-city train service in America outside of a few very specific areas like the north east. What are others thoughts?
