These appear to be legit questions. I always thought Yahoo Answers was a joke/comedy site?

I started the favorite beer thread. I chose CU because I knew I would get a variety of quality suggestions, with specific breweries and styles mentioned, instead of this "best answer" from Yahoo Answers:
My husband & I are members of CAMRA (Campaign for real ale) My favorite is Rasberry beer, although I am also partial to banana bread beer. There are lemony summer beers and rich chocolaty winter beers.Its an individual preference. We tend to drink the traditional ales. There are some brands that go well with certain foods. Best look camera up on the net. They will inform you I'm sure.
Local bar owners also posted about what was on tap and seasonal, which is a plus.

Personally, if I wanted to know if CU was the new Yahoo Answers I would have asked Jeeves.

The one about cats and kitchen counters bugged me. Like, you really started A NEW THREAD to ask that, like there's some specific secret CU answer?
While we're at it, if anyone has a solution for those gangs of unpleasant & pesty Asian beetles (not real ladybugs but similar looking) on high rise balconies, please let me know!

The topic is mostly tongue in cheek, a play off of the "Is Northstar the new McDonald's?" thread.
I guess I just don't understand why people come to CU to find answers to their general knowledge questions. Whenever anybody asks about, say, kitchen remodeling, poor Anne has to go in and post all the links back to where the topic has already been discussed. I understand the appeal of crowdsourcing, but it's like people are too lazy to even use Google anymore.
@K2 The beer question was a good one, and I almost didn't include it b/c it seemed to be a question specifically directed at the CU community rather than just flung out to the interwebz for anyone to answer. Sorry for including it with the rest of the chaff.

Multiple posts can be annoying, but I think it can be a good thing that people are looking to their own community for answers or suggestions. It reminds me of this recent study

The board can serve as a poll, like my thread asking if anyone wanted honeysuckle out of any particular parks.

There are probably thousands of solutions out there for keeping cats off counters, but I think there is some sort of level of comfort/familiarity in asking what your friends and neighbors would recommend rather than taking the advice of a seemingly more random stranger in another part of the country/world.
At least that's my impression...

Google search is like doing research.
CU is like talking among your friends and neighbors and also something to do while passing time at work. I don't see a problem with any of the conversations here as long as they are posted under the correct subject and the OP at least tried to search the subject within CU before posting.
Research = less fun
CU conversation = more funPosted 2 years ago #
