We watched the first season of This American Life two nights ago. I always thought Ira Glass was in his late 20's/early 30's, so when I read his bio and found out he was 50 I was incredible shocked. Am I the only one that has experienced this shock?

A friend & I were once in a bookstore and found a book that contained interviews (and photographs) with/of all the major NPR personalities. It was surprising, if only because you tend to form a unique (but arbitrary) picture of the person after years of just hearing their voice.
We were remarking about this phenomenon after page after page of revelations, when we were interrupted by some cranky bitch who decided to nose in and make a big scene and loudly chastise us for "judging people by their appearances". Since I guess we were already guilty as charged & felt she deserved it, we started in on her instead.
Probably not my proudest moment, but it felt good at the time.

Daniel Schorr - rrrarw.
I did meet Lynne Rossetto Kasper a couple of weekends ago, and she looked exactly like I expected. Such a nice lady!|

I guess what I mean is, while I expected him to look like a disheveled, over-educated, witty, bookish, quirky 30 year old in a tight-fitting sport jacket, he does live up to that expectation. I want to do whatever he did in lift between now and 50.

Well, that photo is from 2001. And he must have spit out his customary mouthful of marbles for that picture.

Chances are, it's his genes. When I met my husband, I thought he was about my age, but he's actually quite a bit older. His mom looks young for her 86 years (and only stopped riding horses at age 82). His grandfather lived to be 104, and drank whiskey every day.
I, on the other hand, started going grey at 22 and had basal cell skin cancer at 34. EDIT: This is not the serious kind - it's the kind all the old people in Florida were notorious for getting....
What 'cha gonna do? I figure, life's short anyway, might as well enjoy it :)

If you're interested in how Ira forms and tells stories there's a great archive of the live tweets from Wednesday's NPR meeting that he presented at. Andy Carvin did the tweeting.

I love radio because of the way it lets your mind create imagery about the voices and stories you're hearing. I hope nothing kills radio, particularly NPR/APR.

Ira Glass famously began his radio career at NPR as a 19 year old intern in the late 70s so I always knew his approximate age, I'm a fan. But yes TT, he does have a youthful outlook/style. He has said that it is one's willingness and ability to take risks that keeps one young.
Blammo: That is so funny! I hope she was a strident baggy pants bad hair with Birkenstocks.
p.s. I still love Terry Gross. If she mated with Brian Lamb...

Evidently he is extremely shy. A friend of mine had calculated a way from them to save a bunch of cash on bandwidth for their podcasts by using Amazon web services. He walked into their studio to give them his analysis. While doing that he met Ira who I guess is very awkward. Either that or my friend creeped him out..

Damn I like Robert SEA-gull.
I searched the NPR personalities page to no avail. Can anyone de-code these NPR phonetics? I have no idea who they are, but I hear them everyday.
Lax Shme Singh?
Kai Risdall?
Usually when I'm listening to radio I'm simultaneously not paying attention.
