And……… the iPad rush is on.
A lot of us are already racking our brains trying to figure out what apps and types of user interaction are best suited for Apple's new iPad.

I had a Kindle in my Amazon shopping cart on three different occasions and just couldn't hit the buy button. Honestly, I'm glad I didn't. For my world, it looks like an iPad is going to make more sense than a Kindle. Although it remains to be seen how they will compare, if at all.

The kindle and a pad computer are two different beasts. The kindle is a reading doohicky, not so much a computing doohicky (although I do use it for email when I'm out). Amazon is opening an "app store" for it. Not sure what is going to come of THAT.
In my case I just cannot read for very long from a backlit LCD or OLED display. I get eyestrain. I have no interest in another LCD/OLED screen.
The tablet concept is an intriguing device as a laptop replacement if only for its compactness. However, unless it comes with a hardshell case that will protect the screen in my pack it would have an effective lifespan of a few days (I'm unfortunately rough on stuff, and yes my kindle now has a hard-shell case).
I can, however, think of several places around the house that I would love to mount a cheap tablet as a dedicated wireless Xwindows terminal for control/display of various functions that I've built into my Xserver here. I'm hoping this new "tablet mania" will result in some cheap ones being produced I can run some reasonable OS on for this purpose.

That's kinda my problem. I get eyestrain. I read Siddhartha on my iPhone last week (Stanza) and did get some eyestrain.

What are the chances that Apple is excluding some features so, they can include them in later rev's and resell the same device? Love the concept, but, feel somewhat "piecemealed" by the way they release and market their products.... Simulated demand based on limited availability, lack of open development\extensibility... Always feels like you should wait for the "next" version that has what you want...

Yeah, I already feel like they are doing the piecemeal thing, right out of the gates with the iPad. The initial audience for the product seems like existing iPhone/ iPod Touch owners who can more immediately see the value of the iPad. They're holding back on the 3G version for 30 days longer than the wifi only version. It's obviously calculated because they know the fan boys will be there day one for the wifi version and will likely upgrade when the 3G version drops.

Of course. Same thing they always do; no video camera for iPhones until the 3GS came out-- really?
iPad has a smaller hard drive then Pods-- no camera, no microphone. Essentials that will surely be apart of the second generation iPad. The lack of a camera and microphone means they aren't initially going to challenge the traditional telecom industry-- which anyone can see is inevitable in due time (VoIP google voice, skype, etc.)
AT&T's ability to handle the data will also be interesting -- they can't provide enough bandwidth for iPhone users alone. Gumshoe investors are looking at tower operators to be the short term beneficiaries of iPad-mania as AT&T and other carriers expand their data capabilities (AT&T contract has a year left..)-- tickers: AMT,CCI,SBA

Jon- I'm not going to be able to make this thing tonight, but I was thinking that, as a graphic designer, I would love an app that let me do napkin sketches with an editing feature, that I could then save to an image file and email. Even if it had simple functionality like paint or something like that.
That's my idea, thanks for asking.

And a good shot too
many of the functions previously monopolized by flash, such as video playback, are apparently part of html5. Youtube has implemented it already if your browser supports it.
Apple's browser (Safari) AND google's Chrome are on that list. Go fig.
Flash is the biggest pile of flaming suck that ever crawled out of the bowels of the code monkeys at adobe and it has been flung far and wide for far too long. I will not be sad to see it die the horrible stinking painful death that it rightly deserves.

Yeah, but that's not the thing.
Want to jump back and forth between pages, a lot, and more quickly. Want to mark up PDFs (a lot). Ideally to underline stuff, jot notes in the margins. etc.
If the iPad uses the iPhone Kindle app as well as Aji Annotate, and they both take advantage of its architecture (in future releases I gather), well, that could be pretty cool.
And I hear you on the fragility thing, but I would have thought my caseless iPhone would have busted by now given what it's been through. Not sure what magic glass they use that's touch sensitive and surprisingly durable, but it's at least given me pause about what the iPad would be like.
Dunno. Dunno. As usual with Apple, figure I'll wait for rev 2. :-)

I get the feeling I would break an iPhone in a few weeks. I drop 'em a lot. Sometimes into odd situations. I am on my third "indestructible" phone (thank you warranty!). I accidentally discovered, for example, that while fully waterproof, they are not acid proof.
My case is not to be considered by any means "normal wear and tear". I'm a clutz plain and simple.

Ipad looks cool, but Apple is the fisher price of technology. Its like my first laptop. Tehy are built cheaply and not built to last. In front of me I have an alienware m17x and a 13" macbook. The alienware is built to last, and built out of solid materials, this mac book feels like a childs toy, and looks like a dirty diaper now too, with the white exterior, with dirt all over it.
