Hi everyone! Could anyone give me some background info about living in Merion Village? I know that the question of safety is relative, but can you try to give me your opinion about the safety of the neighborhood, as well as anything else you can thing of, good or bad? Researching places to live, have a child, but if I can find an affordable home, I will send her to private school. From what I gather, Merion Village is very affordable.

Merion Village is very affordable compared to German Village. If I were looking for home appreciation and worked in the city it would be a top choice.
It has a good neighborhood feel, in that most people take a lot of pride. It has good parking and you can pick up a bus straight into the city.
I may take some heat for this; but further south it gets a little more hillbilly and lower income. However, I've found the people to be honest, polite and hard working. There is some crime in the area, but it appears to be imported from the neighborhoods just east of Marion Village.
It still has an edge of the city feel and I think, in the long term, it will become a very nice neighborrhood to live in. Like German Village, only a younger more family oriented neighboorhood. Actually, 'long term ' is unfair. It looks like a pretty nice place to live right now, with nothing but an upside in the future.

My wife and I moved to Columbus from Boston 3 years ago and we have lived in Merion Village the entire time. We absolutely love it here. We have an 18 month old so I can't yet speak about schools. Affordability is also relative but asking prices of homes here have a pretty good range (low 100's to > 300k)and mostly depend on where in Merion Village the house is and what kind of condition it is in. I have always felt very safe walking in the area at any time of day or night. I live on Mithoff just east of Jeager and we can walk to two grocery stores, a number of restaurants, two parks and more. Hope this helps.

I view the neighborhood as an affordable link to German Village. I work Downtown, and it takes me 5 minutes to get to work. I've never had problems with crime, but I imagine some areas are worse than others. I know nothing about the schools, but I would describe the neighborhood as affordable and conveniently located for commerce and entertainment.

The neighborhood was on my short list when I was looking for my place. Most of the housing stock is single family housing, and most have a decent size yard. There has been a lot of quality rehab work done, and the housing stock seems pretty solid. The neighborhood association is very active, and I think that there is a lot of positive movement with young people wanting affordable housing in the metro downtown area moving there.
My cautions are pretty standard. The prices tend to be higher on the northern end of the neighborhood, closer to German Village. Make sure to check out the neighbors before purchasing a place. Expect a normal amount of city annoyances, grafitti and car/garage break-ins being the top two.

I live at the northern edge of Merion Village, near Schiller, and we really like it. It's getting harder to find a good sized fixer-upper in German Village, but there still are a few in Merion Village. Larger yard sizes (compared to German Village) are also nice.
Lots of younger people are buying - I think my block on my street alone has seen five houses sell in the past two years, and all of the new folks seem to be younger than 40, many in their 20s.
Most parts of Merion Village are close enough to downtown to bike or walk to work - it takes me 30 minutes to walk from home to my office, or about 10 minutes by bike.
We've been lucky to have avoided any type of crime, though we do hear police helicopters not infrequently. With Parsons Ave. undergoing the first signs of a renaissance, I feel confident that the neighborhood will continue its upward trajectory far into the future.
If you do end up here, be prepared for Halloween. You'll go through a TON of candy.

We live on the northern end of Marion Village too. Don't have anything else new to add, just wanted to put a big +1 on what everybody else has already said:
Great housing stock
What little crime I see tends to be of the annoyance/ vandalism sort
Love the proximity to the GV restaurants and downtown
Fairly inexpensive

Architecturally, MV is rather ho-hum, although there are some nice churches sprinkled throughout the neighborhood and a few of the tree lined brick streets are very nice. For me, what would keep me from living here is that it's further away from all the action. To your south is Reeb-Hosack, to the west is a mostly dead High St, to the east are some rather down-trodden neighborhoods with no reason to visit (the projects located there don't help either, like in Vassor Village), so while you can easily get to a grocery or hardware store, options for going out, whether it be a coffeeshop, bar, or restaurant, are more limited unless you head north. Still, there seems to be plenty of good bargains here if being a bit out of the way is no problem. If I were going to get a place here it would be on Gates east of Jaeger since there are two good bars there.

I've been living in the MV for over two years, and it's treated me pretty well. My street (Hanford) has seen a ton of improvement in that that the houses are being bought, cleaned up, and maintained. I love being close to Schiller, downtown, and walking distance to some good bars/restaurants.
The only caution I have is that you can't leave anything visible in your car worth stealing--we get car break ins pretty frequently--and as they say, "out of sight, out of mind."

The exteriors of lots of the houses in central Merion Village aren't terribly interesting, but the craftsmanship inside is usually great. This was a working class neighborhood, but you can tell the people who built homes there had a lot of pride in the area even 80-100 years ago.

We lived in Merion Village 2005-2007 on Jenkins Ave. When we first moved in, there were still a lot of younger people moving in and fixing up houses. As the economy slowed, so did that. In the span of six months, we had one rental occupied next to us occupied by drug dealers, another and another down the alley. Someone decided it would be fun on New Year's Eve in 2007 to take pot shots at the police helicopter, which flew over every other night, with the search light on our house at least once a week. By the time we moved out, we really didn't feel safe where we lived. That being said, I think the closer to German Village you live, the less likely you are to have these problems. There are some people working very hard to turn around Merion Village, and I hope it continues to get safer.

I've been living in the southern side of Merion Village for almost 10 years and I love it here. My neighbors are fantastic, we have had very little trouble with crime (car break in once). Drug dealings seem to be quickly identified and delt with in a timely manner.
I also have a young child, there are plenty of things to do with her close to the house, Parks, COSI, Art Museum ect. The elementary school was just renovated and will reopen this week.
