Hamburger wars flare up anew with arrival of Inferno Gourmet Burger

A Pickerington storefront that once housed a Graffiti Burger shop is being reopened as another burger joint. Medina-based Inferno Gourmet Burger Bar plans to open its second fast-casual restaurant – and its first in Central Ohio – at 10503 Blacklick Eastern Road in February. Inferno, which was started last July, is the brainchild of Sean Brauser, the founder and owner of the 32-shop Romeo’s Pizza chain, which has nine franchised shops in the Columbus area.

I just got an email that this Pickerington location opens Wednesday, February 8th. No opening time stated, but the first 12 burger customers get a free Tour Stop burger per month for the next 12 months.

...The Medina-based Inferno does it slightly different by fire-grilling — not flattop-grilling — its hand-patted, 100-percent Black Angus beef. The price range for the 7-ounce patties, which combine a variety of cuts, is $5.99 for a standard option and $7.99 for gourmet choices. The place has a “salad buffet,” where customers can choose a number of standard toppings, and a gourmet-sauce bar, with such choices as spicy bacon ketchup, chipotle ranch and sweet chile.

The menu is rounded out with sides, grilled-chicken sandwiches, a veggie burger, deep-fried hot dogs and shakes.

While standard white and wheat buns are offered, Inferno also features a soft pretzel bun. It, like Ted’s, also is a full-service restaurant, and will have a full liquor license in place soon.

Unlike the rest, however, it has an intentionally snappy, high-energy environment, with music videos being broadcast throughout business hours, said Sean Brauser, who founded the restaurant over the summer.

“Deluxe fast food hamburger chain” is a viable and expanding genre of restaurant popular in Central Ohio these days. With the opening of an Inferno Burger in Pickerington last week, yet another beefwich sizzler begins vying with Five Guys and Graffiti Burger for your better-than-drive-thru-quality but still cholesterol-be-damned dollars.

Review: Inferno Burger

About two months ago, Inferno Burger opened in Pickerington in a former Graffiti Burger location (their first one to close). This mini-chain is the creation of the founders of Medina-based Romeo’s Pizza, and is the second location to open (the original is in Medina).

Much of the interior of the restaurant is the same, thought the cheesy graffiti has been replace by a fire/flame motive. Flatscreen TVs on the walls were playing a mix of class rock videos and 80s new wave hits. The waitresses and servers were noticeably young (high school?) but friendly, knowledgable and attentive on my visit.
