I take them down, pull them out of the ground, cut them down when I can see/reach them. but some people use ladders and put them out of reach. So, I'm hesitant to take a ladder out and work on a light pole in broad daylight, I'm positive the cops would pull up just as I'm at the top of the ladder. So i call 311 and request them to take some down at an intersection near my house. I am willing to do the work myself, but really don't want the popo trouble. I think 311 sent the request to the city street dept, i don't know, but the signs are still up (yeah, and there's a snow storm I heard about that could be delaying it).

So would anyone know where I can go to get permission or something that keep me from getting arrested when removing litter from our streets?

i would sign up for the volunteer position, but I don't live in the Northland area. i want to clean up My area. areas along Weber and Oakland Park from 71 to Cleveland. but Really what I want is a city wide permission to remove illegal signs.

I'm with you. A week ago I threw a ladder in the wagon and took down a sign at Weber & Indianola. It was dark and I tried to be quick but I felt really exposed. I looked around for cops before I leaned the ladder against the pole. I take down lower signs all the time but this was my first time with the ladder. There are two high signs at Indianola and Oakland Park that I haven't gotten the nerve to remove.

I'm not sure why the signs bother me and my family thinks I'm nuts!

LOL. Just look on West Broad street around Wilson road, they're having a perpetual sale at a dumpy mattress store and they always have signs everywhere. That's if you're not opposed to buying a mattress from a rough-voiced 50ish bar fly lady.

This has also bothered me. I have pulled down my fair share. Found this interesting site that has some "creative" sign removing tools.

I was even thinking of running a contest come spring and offer some sort of reward for whomever removes the most number of Illegal signs. I want to make sure that they can be recycled also.

you could also just spray paint over them.

every election cycle,i make a point of ripping these vote signs up.

it's frigging litter.

there is a guy in Upper Arlington that is notorious for doing this.

on his birthday,the neighborhood filled his whole yard up with signs.

BTW, Baltimore has a sign ordinace that they strengthend 3 years ago.

This is also a safety item for employees as nails and staples in phone poles are dangerous for the climbers - their boot jacks won't seat and they can fall.

Memphis TN has a sign ordinance that they log all the signs that the City removes and then cite the owners. Each sign would be up to a $50 fine plus court costs and repeat offenders could get probation for 10 years prohibiting placement of any signs. They do enforce this.

Climbing a pole or ladder on a pole would probably be a liability issue for the city/owner, but I'm sure if a cop stopped you he wouldn't mind after you explained yourself. By no means take this as permission and don't blame me if you get caught. :)

Don't see any of those red bad credit signs anywhere. Which I thought were just around Columbus, but I went to Canton last weekend and they were around up there too. Gross!

Huh, interesting, I never knew these things bothered people so much.

I wish instead of ripping up signs people would pick up the trash along the road and all the cigarette butts. That garbage looks much worse.

I think the issue is that if no one removed them at some point, they would build up and blanket the whole city... or become the trash on the side of the road, when they start to break down.

And folks do clean up along the highways - usually along ramps - Keep America Beautiful organizes one Saturday every year.

What would be even better is if people didn't litter in the first place. Every time I'm behind a car where the driver flicks something (usually a cigarette) out the window, I wish there was a hotline to call & report them. Lazy bastards. /getoffmylawn
