Anyone watching AI this season? Call me crazy, but I think it's a better show without Simon and Paula. The picks in recent seasons were all so bland and forgettable. It's a much stronger and more memorable pool of talent this year. Randy seems to have taken over the "villain" role of delivering the hard truths, Steven is very entertaining, and J Lo is nurturing without being completely insubstantial the way Paula so often was.

I agree somewhat, the talent pool definitely seems MUCH deeper this year. Not so sure about Randy though ... all I have heard him say is "dog, that was kareoke like, you didn't make it your own" seems like that was his phrase last year too.

All I know is every time he comes on my screen, I want to beat Jacob Lusk with my shoe. He's *that* annoying.

For me it's just the opposite, I can't get into it, the show w/out Simon just isn't the same. I miss Simon.

I miss Simon.Simon had an entertaining personality, no doubt, and his zingers made for great TV, but as a judge he was relentlessly commercial, and not really all that knowledgeable about the actual music side of the business. Every time he spoke you could almost hear his brain calculating how much money he was going to make off the contestant.

Just want to clarify that Simon IS the business side of the music. I mean, that's how he made his money, long before TV shows came around, he was/is a label exec. Agree or disagree with his opinions of the performances, delivery of messages, etc., but that's just plain inaccurate to say he doesn't know or understand talent in the biz. He cheerleaded for many of the less commercial contestants, America just didn't agree.
As per usual, I dig more of the guys than the girls. There's only so much vocal acrobatics I can listen to in one night before I just want to scream. I'll be anxious to see who America put through. Hoping for musical/talent diversity, if not from the votes, then from the judges with the wildcards they put through.

I have turned past the show 3 or 4 times, everytime it seems to be about a Drama or crybaby stuff rather than singing. The whole show seems scripted and fake. The singers seem to be more like polished pros istead of regular joes.

Watching karaoke singers try to become famous.
Reality shows so painfully scripted, it's insulting.
Tune out.

Its X number of people sing, people vote, that's it.

12 people are getting voted off tonight...they are wasting no time picking the finalists.
Yeah, I agree with you all who said the show jumped the shark when Simon left.
Because, American Idol without Simon is like the Cavs without LeBron James, Pizza without cheese, Script Ohio without that tuba player dotting the "I", Avatar without computer generated actors, Frasier without Kelsey Grammer, you get the picture...it's a puzzle with a big piece missing.

I've been a huge Idol fan in previous years, and a fan of these kinds of shows in general because of the rare "holy shit" moment that they provide. Paul Potts is something I still go back and watch from time to time, because its just that amazing to me.
Get the Video Plugin I just don't see anyone in the Idol competition this year who motivates me to keep watching like that. Pia is pretty amazing, couple of the guys are standouts, but nothing knocking me off my feet and giving me goosebumps when I listen.

Pia and the big bearded kid who did Joe Cocker are both crazy good. Starting to like this season again.
ETA: I'm still watching last night's episode and some kid with a Faux Hawk just butchered Maybe I'm Amazed, which happens to be my favorite song of all time.
F' you Idol.

I know there was a lot of shock over Pia's elimination tonight, but personally I thought she was the least interesting of the finalists. She was a great singer, but every song was straight out of the karaoke diva songbook. Unless Celine Dion keeled over last night, I think that spot in pop culture is already filled for the foreseeable future.
I'm not sure this pool of finalists is as strong as I thought they were at first, but at least there are a few eccentrics in the bunch to keep things interesting. Although I do miss Naima in that category.

The African-American guy - Jakob - and the bearded dude are really talented and have kept me watching this year.... both have amazing voices, extremely talented and are worth slowing down my DVR-fast forwarding through the show for...
