I have been thinking lately about the celebration for Columbus’ Bicentennial in 2012. I remember a little while ago, that the city wanted to celebrate the important mark with different events scattered throughout the year. I am not sure if this is still the plan, since I haven’t heard anything for some time, but here is an idea of mine.
I think we should throw a 2 to 3 day music festival throughout Downtown Columbus marking our bicentennial. The initial one would focus around celebrating the 200th birthday, but after that, if successful, it could become an annual event.
Since all of the parks currently being constructed in downtown are scheduled to be completed by 2012, with many of them including stages for concerts, how great and how fun would it be to have a downtown wide music festival for 2 or 3 days spread out over all the parks?
The Stages/Parks that could be used include the amphitheater in front of COSI, the Bicentennial Park Stage, Columbus Commons, and a few temporary ones could be set up on the Whittier Peninsula and at Genoa Park. Also, although I know it’s privately owned, the LC could house a few bands and possibly even Huntington Park for bigger draws.
The model I am thinking of is based off other musical festivals I attended in Europe. Although I admit that none of them were set in an urban setting, I think that would help to make the Columbus Music Festival unique. We could have multiple bands performing at the same time across downtown on the various stages. The music could start around 11:00 a.m. each day with less popular bands. By nighttime though we could get the headline bands on all of the stages with the bigger draws at the bigger venues (I know that is a common model but I just wanted to point it out).
I know this is a grand plan and would take a massive effort to coordinate and complete, but if done correctly it could become a regional event that brings in tourists and generates recognition for our city. Possibly even one day it could be an event people attend from all over the nation. I realize that these are lofty goals with many assumptions and no real direct plan, but I do think there is potential in the idea.
….Well if you’ve actually read the whole blog I appreciate it! Please let me know what you think of it, even if you think it is stupid, far-fetched, or just couldn’t ever happen. I just wanted to get it out there and get some thoughts from different people. Thanks.
