I was really excited when NBC4 put a studio downtown because it made downtown feel more like a downtown. But now it seems as though that studio doesn't get used much.. I would love to see all the news stations open up a downtown bureau.. I'd also love to see some of the local radio stations open up "satellite" or full locations in downtown.
Wishful thinking.... i know... :)

I'd like to think that with 10tv's new coverage of Columbus 2015 and forum discussions this would have happened long ago. Besides its their coverage that will get many Columbus' residents to visit and do business downtown!

What qualities of the NBC studio cultivated a downtown feeling for you? I’ve viewed at it as a slap in the face of the downtown aesthetic, but I would be curious to hear an opposing opinion.
As far as downtown bureaus or satellite offices for the television and radio stations, I think you overestimate the size of Columbus. If you have a car and it is not snowing, you can travel between any two points in Franklin County in 20 minutes. Moving any media business downtown has no upside in terms of logistics or financials (when you consider the expense of real estate downtown).

Perhaps I've been sleeping for a bit, but the Dispatch and Columbus Alive are located Downtown, and WBNS could hit Downtown Columbus with a 3-wood. WBNS Radio is also located in the Brewery District. It seems that most of Columbus' media are located in or around Downtown with the exception of the Other Paper, WOSU and Channels 6 and 28.
Plus, Columbus' uber-influential Columbus Underground also has Downtown offices!

From a TV industry perspective, downtown studios have failed in a lot of cities bigger than Columbus. I also think that in the YouTube world we now live, people don't care as much about getting on TV, especially local tv.
You also have to consider parking news vehicles, choppers, trucks, employee parking, fiber feeds from the plant to the stick (or cable company), and investing many more millions that this weakening media industry doesn't have. What about traffic issues when there's breaking news at 4:30pm and you need to get to the freeway? There's a lot to consider...

WKYC-TV 3 in Cleveland tried something similar for a couple of years with their Akron News Bureau, which also doubled as an Akron/Cable news broadcast studio with a ground floor window to the intersection of Market and Main in Downtown Akron (sans the tickers and media screens). Unfortunately, WKYC at one point was losing so much revenue that they had to make significant cuts to their overall news staff, including the newsroom in Akron. The broadcast got the ax.
I don't dislike the whole "public access/relations" news concept, but I just don't think our current economics and urban policies (what urban policy?) in general really support these kinds of ventures. New York City still does (e.g. the Today Show, The Early Show, etc.) but then, NYC is a very unique place. Columbus and all other US cities are making a half-hearted effort at best to emulate them.

I don't think that the Today Show/Early Show model has much to do with New York as a city, so much as New York as a tourist destination. I could be wrong, but I've never had the impression that the crowds outside the window on those shows were local New Yorkers.
What I'd like to see (and would tune in every night to watch) would be a Monty Python style presentation, where the anchor desk moves to a different location around the city each night. Not only would it be a unique way to present the news, but it could also show off unique areas around town and make the local news feel more like, well, local news.

Ok, so here's my deal with local tv stations; you just don't get it.
Traffic, weather, sports and a shooting/fire.
Who cares.
Give me more of a story. You know the original producer of 60 Minutes died a few months ago. Wanna know the secret to his success there? 4 words. "Tell me a story".
So, come on Columbus, do that! And guess what, maybe local media outlets wouldn't have to shrink, and yet expand.
Here's one idea to chew on. The man who drove down 71 a few months ago, shot 2 cops and barricaded himself in a house on campus to kill himself. There were hundreds of cop cars down there, looked like Christmas. Tell me a story. What was his upbringing like? His mother, father, girlfriend? Did his Grandpa beat the shit out of him? Where did all this anger come from?
Now, that's interesting. I love the anchors of local news, but come on, give me some meat to chew on!

WOSU has a studio in COSI, they've broadcast some national shows out of there.
