Brownie fix satisfied.
I started at Mozart's in Clintonville. Their signature brownie is the German Chocolate Brownie, so a brownie with German Chocolate icing. Looked yummy, not what I was after.
Then I hit Aladdin's. They only had bars. Tempting, tasty looking bars. No brownies.
Then I made a beeline for pattycake as it was mere minutes before closing time. A little name tag on an empty plate said spelt fudge brownies. I almost cried. Then I noticed them chilling in the cooler and all was right in the world. One brownie purchased.
On my leisurely walk back to the car I did a double take when I passed a pastry shop, I blew right by it on the way to pattycake. It was the above mentioned Simple Sweets in the same strip as Lavash. So since they were brand new with a still crisp "Now Open" sign I thought I'd throw them some brownie business. It was very clean and brand new inside, right down to a sharp disinfectant-y smell. Not exactly the smell you're hoping for when you walk into a bakery shop inhaling deeply. Maybe paint was still drying, maybe they just cleaned for the night, I'm not going to hold it against them, it was just unexpected. Pretty, well lit display case with cakes and torts and cookies and the desired brownies. I was offered a free cookie but just opted for the brownie. This is perhaps a little (or a lot) picky, but most of the brownies were corners, like the brownie was cooked in a pan then cut into 4ths. I'm more of a middle, no sides brownier, but that's just me. Their brownie is on the left, corner mostly intact.
In a head to head competition there was no runaway winner. Together they satisfied my brownie need but neither brownie by itself would have done it. If I had to pick one to get again it would be pattycake. It's sooooo fudgy which gave me pause, and the need for more napkins, I wanted brownie not fudge. But it ends up being just a super moist brownie like you're eating solidified brownie batter. There's something to be said about a little cakieness to a brownie though.
On the flip side the Simple Sweets brownie was a little too cakey, with a little crusty top and bottom. Other than that it was more traditional brownie texture and general brownie tasting.
So between the super good brownie taste of the pattycake brownie and the more cake like texture of the inside of the Simple Sweets brownie I got my brownie fix after a couple of bites of each. I'm wondering if I put what's left in the fridge together overnight if they would procreate leaving me the perfect little brownie for breakfast.
