Yep, huge Obama fan, but not sure I get it either honestly.

I dunno it seems a bit early to be giving out such recognition. If anything, it's a "you're not George W. Bush" award.

kicker - the nominations for the award were closed 12 days after the guy was elected....

Yeah - he should turn it down. He really hasn't done anything to EARN it yet.
@drew - I definitely see this as the committee attaching some golden handcuffs to keep Obama doing what they like (which is the Euro-style of talking inclusively and actually doing nothing?)Posted 2 years ago # -
I'm sure even he's shaking his head in disbelief.

Of course not being George Bush is a significant achievement for world peace.

I guess it's been a slow year in diplomacy.

I agree with most people on this thread. It's too early. He has good ideas for better world relations, but has he really done anything yet?

Talk to one of those Chinese democracy activists...

+1 Merc. I was just trying to think of who else could have been in strong contention.
As some of you have suggested, how does one turn down the Nobel peace prize? I'd look at such action as being offensive.
I'm happy to see an American awarded the prize. My impression is that this is an acknowledgment to his effort, and a challenge to accomplish it. Nukes and diplomacy are the hot topics this year, as global warming was two years ago when Gore won it.

Is Obama the proper recipient for this award at this time? Honest answer? No.
I'm a huge Obama fan and even I can see that this is more an anti GWB bush thing than it is for anything Obama has done. That said, I think his redirection of U.S. foreign policy is note worthy, but still several years away from seeing if it turns out to be award worthy.
It is a strange day when the Nobel Committee giving out an award to someone I support and respect actually lessens my opinion of them.

But my work as President of the United States has just begun. I have not yet had the opportunity to affect global peace in the way so many other nominees have done." And then he could pick five or ten people from around the world and use his bully platform to talk about their accomplishments.

Couldn't see my opinion of Obama being changed by it, unless the award itself influences his policy making too much.

I don't see the award having much effect on his policy. In fact, I would posit that someone who wanted to win a Nobel prize would be more likely to change his behavior at the prospect of an award, not after already being awarded it.
