Yesterday, while trying to switch off my desktop (primary) computer, it went into update hell. It seemed to hang during restart, so I did a hard shut down. Later, I found that I was unable to start the silly machine. I tried the auto repair feature and it failed.

Okay, I put the installation DVD back in and ran repair from there. It got the system to boot, but I got an error message from Windows update saying that the update won't function because the installation is corrupted.

I am packing my bags as quickly as I can, but I hear the helicopters overhead. I only hope that I can make it out of here and onto the highway before the authorities from Microsoft arrive. I don't know what to tell Mae.

If they're Microsoft helicopters, you have nothing to fear. They'll crash at least twice a day.

I just rolled into Buenos Aires at 3am this morning. I had to fight off a roving pack of Microsoft cyborgs (Cyberdyne Systems T-850 Model 103 Terminators...darn toasters are hard to kill) just outside of Georgetown Guyana. Nothing since then; I think I am safe for now.

Mae says my computer started up again and seems to be running fine. Whatever the problem was, it finally fixed itself. Maybe Microsoft will call of the hounds now that the machine is alive again.

I don't know if Ubuntu will bring my oldest computer back to life. There is only so much you can do with a 486 DX-2 50mhz with 32 meg of RAM.

I made my way across the Rio La Plata to Montevideo for lunch. Now I have to be off again. The cyborg killers from Microsoft will never give up.

How do you like my disguise? A little JUST FOR MEN and I look like a completely different person! I may have Mae join up with me and we will try to take the Northwest Passage.

Hah! I've got a 486/50MHz machine gathering dust somewhere at my parents' house (or maybe at their non-climate-controlled storage locker, which probably means the elements have taken it to the silicon scrap heap in the sky by now). I remember the techie thrill I got when I upgrated it to a 2.0Gb HDD and 64Mb of RAM (PC-33, I think).

And yet ... daggone it, but MS-DOS 6.2 and Win 3.1 almost never crashed on me. Even the infamous blue screens of death were rare. I was quite the MS fan in those days. I used to think that I was just becoming jaded as I got older (and that may be true on other fronts), but then I woke up and realized that later MS products really were teh suck.
