Aside from self-flagellation, what do I do now?
Macbook was closed, spilled it on the desk, not on Macbook. Grabbed it out of puddle and wiped it off. Flipped out for a few minutes. Finally took battery off -- totally dry. Everything seemed good. But now won't stay on. I turn it on, screen goes dark after just a minute.
Help. Have you done this? What did you do?
With the Apple store take advantage of my vulnerability if I take it there? Are there any other good Mac repair places?

my nice sony camera got dunked in a cooler during comfest. i stuck it it a bowl and covered it with dry rice for two days and the rice wicked the moisture out of it. works totally fine.
this probably won't help but i thought it was cool.
i've never heard anything negative about the apple stores.

I agree with Tenzo... I once dunked a cell phone. I pulled the battery and let it and the phone think about themselves for a couple days - reunited them, and it worked fine. Give it some time (which I know SUCKS) - I'd say at least 12 hours, more likely 24 hours, to see if there's any drying out that can occur.

water is gonna dry out a little different than coffee, which is a mild acid when wet and will leave residue when dry. Do you have the type of macbook where the power cord is attached by magnet, or is there an older style plug/receptacle? if the latter, i'd have a peek in there and see if I could get out as much as possible. q-tips, maybe some of that dust-off stuff in a can if you can do it without blowing liquid farther into the recesses.

Battery out, laptop open and tilted for drying. Think I might give it a few days to dry out entirely, though I didn't think much got in there. Clearly, though, something did, hence it acting wonky.
If it dies, I'm hoping work will let me take a bereavement leave.

I say get it to a pro ASAP! I've spilled a latte on my laptop multiple times and the coffee absorbed into the motherboard and f-ed it up pretty badly. Time is of the essence. I used The Laptop Guy to help me. But I'm a PC.

Turn it screen side down with a towel folded between the screen and keyboard. This will allow gravity to work and hopefully pull the liquid out of the electronics. Worked well on an HP that had water spilled on it (screen closed).
On the contrary, my one daughter killed a laptop by dumping breast milk all over it.

We have a guy here who is an absolute whiz with technology repair. He's more of a PC guy but the rest of us are all Mac users, so he's gotten plenty of Mac experience. If you're interested, our rates and so forth are here:

EDIT: Just talked to our repair guy by phone. He said check to see if the power adapter is working (should be a little light) and also see whether the fan revs up real high right before it shuts off. He also said if you want to bring it in Thurs morning, he'll take a look at it for free and you can decide if you want him to work on it after he gives you an estimate.

The acid in the coffee is going to destroy the electronics. When it dries the residue will still remain and any humidy will help it slowly eat away at the electronic components.
Best thing to do is find someone to take it apart and properly clean and dry everything before reassembling.
Time is of the essence. I wouldn't power it up anymore. Leave it off until fixed.

I'd take it to the Apple store. Why are you so afraid of them? That's kinda what they do...sell and fix Apple shit...
ETA: I've taken all my Apple stuff there over the years and never paid for one "fix"
Of course it's all been goofy stuff where something just needed reset or whatever. With my last laptop, I broke part of the charger off in the plug in port doohickey...they didn't even make me leave it there...just fished out the metal, made sure it still worked with a new charger, sold me a new charger to replace the one I busted and out the door I went.

Oh Oh OH! I did this a year ago. Diet Dew, 2-4TBbs dumped on/into the keyboard.
It did the same turn-offy thing you reported while it was drying out.
Fine within 24. (hair dryer and several other interventions involved so I could feel pro-active)
I'm typing on it now.
