I Am Looking For a Job and Have No Where Else To Turn To

Being Producer of the soon-to-be-cancelled Oprah Show would most definately be a competitive job opening. Good luck even being heard back from Harpo.

Start small and move up big.

As a plug, the Ohio State Fair is hiring for its almost 2-weeks, download the application and turn it in on the Fairgrounds Monday-Friday between 1-4 between now & the end of this month. I'll post this in the other thread.

Were you able to defer your student loans? We graduated from the same school and I know mine were pretty substantial.

K2, yes.

I've narrowed down my options to the three best options:
1) Look for just anything right now (which I have) I can get, while I am still looking for the right job
2a & 2b, respectively) Go into business for myself/be the next Walker Evans
3) Go to grad school (which would also mean leaving Columbus)
and I've already done my 4th option (find a Temp Agency)

I love Toronto, I really do; it is a great city. However, tOSU has fantastic and highly ranked grad programs (much higher than the undergrad program). I was a tOSU undergrad (and decided to go to Case Western for grad school), but I know that one need not leave Columbus for a great grad school degree (I cannot defend my own position, but Case is a really good school), so I wonder why BC says he has to leave Columbus for grad school.

I presume he (or she) is an Ohio State graduate and knows that tOSU offers great grad programs, so my curiosity has the best of me now.

Sometimes a school will prefer not to take someone who has an OSU undergrad for a masters or phd program. Having an undergrad from the same school can actually hurt you- dependson the program and people of course, but I have heard that more than once.

OP didn't go to OSU and I'm assuming from all the bashing, wouldn't. Doesn't OU have one of the country's best journalism programs though? Why would you have to leave the state?

OP is definitely not suited for journalism school. A writing/journalism/critical thinking career is not likely in his future.

I would suggest going to grad school for something that would eventually lead to employment (ie, not journalism, broadcasting, communications, or film). Especially since the OP seems particularly unsuitable for these fields (they do currently require a high level of personal charm and it helps to be stunningly attractive as well). The OP should play to his strengths (whatever they may be).

I don't know if it's the case with journalism or communications, but in the humanities you pretty much have to apply to grad schools all over the place and see where you get in. There are so many students applying for slots (in creative writing, it can be as high as 100 to 1) that you really can't plan on attending one specific school. Plus, even more importantly, you have to find a school that shares (or is at least compatible with) your academic philosophy, and hopefully professors who you'd like to work with. You can certainly try to focus on a specific school or region, but, unlike undergrad, it's almost impossible to just pick a school and attend.

I also strongly recommend against grad school in communications or journalism, and I can offer real life lessons on this: My sister has a bachelor's degree in communications, and I know another friend who has a master's in it. Neither were able to find jobs in the field. My sister switched careers and went into teaching. My friend with the master's is currently working on a term government position, and I don't know what she plans on doing when that expires.

Most master's degrees will take more from you than you'll get for the degree. Obviously, they tempt you with the fact that there are definitely exceptions, but it's like roulette: the odds are not in your favor. In general, most people who get master's degrees in journalism or communications and make it work were already impressive writers and persuasive and analytical communicators before they entered those programs. It's somewhat depressing: Despite the fact that there is stiff competition to get into graduate school in the humanities and JCom, the competition really doesn't seem to be noticeably improving the quality of the work product produced by bearers of those degrees. (I don't have a Master's in communication, but I would confidently match my own writing against most people who do--and I'd match the writing of several other frequent posters on these message boards, for that matter, even some whose occupations and credentials are completely unknown to me, against those same JCom students.)

Well, it depends on what you want to get out of the master's degree. When I applied to graduate school, I had no delusions that getting a master's in creative writing/poetry would open up job opportunities at the poetry factory. My writing did improve there, but that had more to do with being in a community of writers than any specific class, and you can build/find those communities outside of school. The biggest thing I got out of it was that I stumbled into drawing comics, which has put me on the path I'm on now. That was as much an issue of different things coming together at just the right time, and might have happened without school, but those kinds of revelations do happen in grad school (I have another friend in the poetry program who found herself with a career in business and technical writing).

The biggest advantage of graduate school for writing, assuming you can find an assistantship, is time. A good assistantship will give you teaching experience, enough to live off of (if you're smart about your money and willing to live like a monk for a while), and pay for your tuition. If you play your cards right, it's two years to figure out what you want to be doing, to make connections, to learn a lot (my knowledge of contemporary performance poetry might not have many practical uses, but you can't say I didn't learn anything ;-), and to find aspects of your field that you might never have considered.

I wouldn't recommend going to grad school (at least in the humanities or for writing) just on student loans, outside of teaching, a master's alone isn't necessarily going to open enough doors to make $10,000 worth it. But if you can find funding, there are a lot of advantages to going if you use your time there wisely.
