Recently seen on Gawker. Recently, cartographer Bill Rankin produced an astounding map of Chicago, which managed to show the city's areas of racial integration.

Eric Fischer saw those maps, and took it upon himself to create similar ones for the top 40 cities in the United States. Fisher used a straight forward method borrowed from Rankin: Using U.S. Census data from 2000, he created a map where one dot equals 25 people. The dots are then color-coded based on race: White is pink; Black is blue; Hispanic is orange, and Asian is green.

Interesting as a broad generalization. Although the resolution being limited to groups of 25 people will tend to mathematically bias the color selection towards the majority population of any neighborhood where other reported ethnicities are not clustered by address, which in columbus is most neighborhoods. Do that with a resolution of 5 or 3 and you'll get different colors. *shrug*

According to the Census, my town is about 99% white. The county seat of my county, Highland, was purportedly one of the last to undergo integration, under a whole lot of duress. It's... uh... a hell of a lot o'whiteness out here.

Do you think that matters a bit? Sometimes people forget that diversity goes beyond census designated "race." White is not a monoculture.

Our area looks pretty blue on the map. According to zip code data, our zip code's (43203) population was 10,906 in 2008 and had a white population of 770. So that's a hair over 7% white for the neighborhood.

An imperfect representation, to be sure, but the general depiction it offers of our city's residential patterns is quite accurate....and not at all out of step with other cities nationwide.

It would be beneficial to see a more specific, community-by-community breakdown.

Well, out here it kind of is. Scotch-Irish to the hilt. No one has moved here that didn't have to, for oh... a while. :)

There is an interesting anomaly in the Col map, notice that there are few blue dots in the more rural areas outside 270? Now look at the area around Orient, lots of dispersed blue dots. I assume these are the homes of workers at the prison.

Also only a few orange Hispanic dots in the Lincoln Park West area. I have a feeling the map will be very different with the 2010 data.

I could say my neighborhood is painfully black, which it is, but I would probably be banned, November 1 I will be in a burb that is 92% white and only 2% black. Exact opposite of where I am now.
