adrock, that's not a bad point, but how many people do you think would have never gone to the bar on a non hockey night if they didn't first go on a hockey night? you can't really argue that the jackets didn't spark the growth in the AD, and it's helped to get it on the map so even people who hate hockey might go on an off night when they wouldn't have before. also, i'm not sure if huntington would've been moved if it weren't there, who knows.
But look how the bars and restaurants in the Arena District took away customers from similar establishments in the Brewery District.
I could never understand why development in the Arena District got tax subsidies (tax abatements and TIFs). The Arena District's location is primo.
Tax abatements for bars, restaurants, and housing just create an over-supply which leads to blighted areas in other parts of the city. Look how the tax abatements for Polaris and Easton helped to kill City Center and Northland and other retail clusters.
Bingo, and mc5, this is a perfect answer to your emotional appeal in favor of a bailout. Columbus has been playing "find the silver bullet" for a long, long time. "Hey, let's give tax credits to City Center! no, wait, now Easton! Hey, isn't it a shame what happened to Northland and City Center?"
We have to stop playing this game - if the Jackets need to go, then they need to go. No sense stealing from the people of Columbus when they have expressed in no uncertain terms that they don't want to be stolen from to line the pockets of the NHL.
