I'm not sure if God just got caught up on realizing how much I blaspheme or what, but I've got a world of bad and stress going on. Give me your wisdom: how do you de-stress? Aside from booze, that is.

Take off your shoes and make fists with your toes.

Well it used to be strenuous exercise in a non stress locale for me.
Exhaustion plus endorphins seem to work for a lot of people as long as it's away from the cause of said stress.

I like to keep it simple with a nice workout and a evening with a cigar. Working out releases endorphin's.Which is a good thing.

I think I mean relieving bigger stress.
While following exercise up with smoking is one option, I usually walk over to Weiland's and buy seafood.

Yoga or professional massage
Running
Dancing
Writing
Drinking
Watching great movies
Going to a nature preserve and hiking around
Going to a body of water and getting into it
Getting a little sun
Eating out of doors
Farmer's market trip
Reading while eating a huge bowl of carbohydrates (my favorite!)
Letting it all hang out
Talking on the phone with an old friend who lets you let it all hang out
Painting
Going for a walk in the woods on a finite trail; tell yourself you will come out with a solution to your problem
Cooking while drinking wine and listening to the radio
Being around someone really funny, or someone who thinks you're really funny
Sitting in a hammock with a giant book of short stories
Drinking whisky by a fire
Hanging out with other people's kids (yes, it just works that way)
Cleaning someone else's house or helping them with a problem
Volunteering
Listening to the wind in the trees, or watching clouds
Walking in the woods at night under a full moon... works better if you're a little scared, and it's cold outsideIf all else fails, and Weiland's is closed... Akai Hana

I head to Alana's, sit in the wine bar, order a glass of wine and an appetizer, and savor them, alone, in silence, for about an hour, start to finish.

sometimes i get completely overwhelmed by all my obligations & they just merge into a huge sense of doom. when that happens I like to make a "to do" list that usually starts out with immediate problems but eventually works its way up the hierarchy of needs into more fulfilling activities. It makes my problems tangible & gives me a sense of hope for the future.
a motorcycle ride always helps me because you can't really be preoccupied when you're facing potential death. it really brings me "in the moment". also, a run or bike ride, or any other demanding physical activity can really drain off that worry.
if you can sit & meditate, that helps too…try & think about times 10 years ago when you were stressed out, and how irrelevant those problems are to you now. Then picture yourself 10 years from now considering your present difficulties and know that they too will seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things. then picture yourself on your deathbed & then imagine how silly it is to waste the gift of life by worrying about things, especially those things out of your control.
the last thing I remind myself of, is my father giving himself an ulcer on his colon from stress, eventually resulting in him getting a colostomy. his stress damn near killed him, and I have the genetic predisposition to handle stress the same way. so if i don't find a way to channel stress in a productive way, it could very well be my undoing. and that would be a pretty freaking lame way to go.

Playing video games - Star Wars Legos on the Wii is one of my favorites.

Another good option for the right demographic is coed naked lacrosse.
It raises all sorts of OTHER issues, but generally whatever was bothering you at the start of the game isn't bothering you any more at the end.

Something physical: Working out with weights, long walk in the woods... something like that. Must be done alone; no cell phone either.
Bigger stress? Find one of my close friends to talk to, since it's likely more than just the day to day stuff.

Sometimes reading CU is how I de-stress. Other times it's how I re-stress. It all depends on who is posting.

Don't forget to make sure you're getting enough omega fatty acids, calcium and B vitamins.
If you can keep a regular bedtime and waking time, melatonin is nice, too.

A ride on the motorcycle is the best anti-stress I've ever experienced.

I kid, I kid but seriously, if it is serious get out of the state and if you can't do that, get out of the city and get back to nature. I like to go to nature and contemplate geologic time and realize things happened a billion years before me and will probably be happening a billion years after me. Greenhouses and gardens are nice just to sit and watch things grow. I like going to the woods and seeing the richness and diversity.
If it is minor stresses then count on your, as you say, significant other. Ask them to pamper you 'cause the world has got you down. By pamper I mean back and foot messages, a good dinner that they cook and clean and renting your favorite movie or playing your favorite music.
Finally, I would recommend a ginger compress. Simmer five ounces of grated fresh ginger in two quarts of water for 10-15 minutes. Strain out the ginger and throw it in your compost. Soak a washcloth in the water and apply to your back and neck. Keep dipping the cloth and reapplying so that it stays warm.
Valerian tea is supposed to be some good stuff for stress too?
I usually just stick to boozin' and having my back cracked though.

Three of the things that always work for me:
Riding my bike
Coffee and at least a few minutes of alone time-or just sitting in a coffee shop away from the stress with the caffeine
Blasting some good jazz-single malt and a plate full of warm chocolate chip cookies helps here

Too funny. I'm not religious, but grew up in a very religious area where everything was "Lord have mercy," "Oh, lord," "Lordy," etc. It sticks regardless of practice.
Related to all the nature walk suggestions:
I noticed a really nice cemetery while I was driving around a 315 detour, lost as hell. I think I might have been somewhere near OSU, though I would really have no idea. I began out in Clintonville at least. Anyhow, in my hometown a lot of people walked around our large, similar cemetery. Calm, open, etc. I always thought they were peaceful. Do people do that here? And does anyone know what cemetery I'm talking about? Large, black fence, I think. Somewhere in the middle-ish, central-ish area of the city.

1. Buy a dog (preferably shih tzu).
2. Name said dog.
3. Take said dog to Schiller, Goodale, or similar park.Posted 2 years ago # -
Getting up onstage at open mic and yelling for about two to three minutes is quite the cathartic act.
