once Bono and Jeni's are on every exit, they will be mediocre as well.Good point, I mean Northstar is already pretty much McDonald's.
YES!!!

Can we please get back to arguing about politics?
I suppose it kind of depends on where the visitors live. Most of the places are pretty mediocre, BUT, if I lived in a really small town or rural area, I might actually be excited to go to TJ Maxx, simply because i didn't have a lot of shopping options.
Also people have priorities. For example, I have a beatup honda civic with a huge hold in the bumper. I don't get people who have $500/month car payments, but that's just not my priority. I usually buy clothing at Target or Old Navy, because I wear nothing but jeans/long skirts and black tee shirts.
Sometimes I wish delicious food weren't such a priority for me, because then I would be skinny, and then maybe dressing would be more of a priority!
But I think it's all about perspective. Those of us who are lucky enough to live in a city have tons of choices to go anywhere we want. I have relatives who live in the Yukon. They have to drive 90 miles to take a bush plane 4 hours to the airport. They only get mail once a week. I imagine for them, ANYTHING would be welcome - even Olive Garden.
As an aside, I heart you, JimL2. I never feel ripped off with my 99 cent hash brown at McDonalds. And yes, I realize it flies in the face of everything I stand for. But, since that hash brown always comes after a night of overindulgences, I have to do penance already, so why not just add to the sins.
North Star is more like Panera than McDonalds.
When my family comes to town from the UK all they want to do is go to Tuttle mall, Polaris mall, and DSW. Why? because the prices at the malls are cheaper for them here in the US than in the UK on middle range fashions (gap, J crew..) The high end stuff (like a lot of the stuff you find in boutique shops we have) is the same price both here and in the UK, so no real savings.
just my experiences.
The mediocre stuff gives me a headache or makes me tired or both.
I always go for the kind.
naw, go to jamaica if you want to party like that. DR just gets schawg from columbia, icky gross.

Oh, lets see...
Northstar has become more like Panera. Overpriced meals of too many calories, they're now the Republican / suburban destination of fake culture for fat white Christian people with bad clothes and too much money.
It was better in it's edgy, urban days when it was more Democrat. More ethic and cultural diversity ( gays, the gatekeepers of modern culture, wanted to be seen there back then, you know ), hardly any whites (only the ones that felt guilty for their accident of birth) and obvious Christians were driven out with a generous sneer of disdain.
... so that covers politics, religion, sexual preference, classism, general snobbery... think that about trolls everyone... =)
I love this message board

I overheard a conversation between coworkers about places to take visitors... The list included CostCo, Kohl's, TJ Max, Olive Garden, Carfagnia's, Marshall's, the Outlet Mall, Raisin Rack, etc.
Many of these things are not like the others, too ... I tend to avoid chain restaurants because they offer mediocrity at the same price that you could get something better. Marshall's is fine for a couple of pairs of black socks or what have you (I don't think I'd ask to go see one in another city, but Century 21--the store, not the real estate brokerage--in Manhattan gets a fair number of retail tourists). Carfagna's and Raisin Rack, as people noted, really are smaller places.
Funny thing is NYC now has JCPenny, Hooters, Red Lobster and even K-Mart. Meanwhile, Columbus has become much more diverse, interesting and unique. Especially the Short North, which is like a mini Soho. I think the suburbanization of Manhattan and the Urbanization of Columbus has taken place. Of course nothing is a great as the NY experience, but you really don't have to visit there any longer to get that urban high.groundrules wrote >>
