How can people settle for just the mediocre???

I overheard a conversation between coworkers about places to take visitors... The list included CostCo, Kohl's, TJ Max, Olive Garden, Carfagnia's, Marshall's, the Outlet Mall, Raisin Rack, etc.

I was glad to hear Raisin Rack on the list, but the others? Almost every city in America has these places. These places don't define Columbus. What mediocracy! Yes, I do shop at these places, but there are so many great local and independant placs that make Columbus a great place to live--that's what we need to show off.

same reason I am happy to drive a Dodge and not a Lexus or the like. People like what they like. I dont think we should fault them for that. Just being devil's advocate here. I do enjoy the more local, independent shops as well, but not everyone does. They like the cookie cutters.

Really? Honey, that's why BUSH was president, but that's another thread, right?

I know when my parents come to visit, they love nothing more than to go to Easton. I know a lot of folks hate on Easton, and I have my moments with the place as well, but the reality is for folks coming from a much smaller town, it's pretty damn fancy. It's also an illusion of perfection, right? The clean city without any of the actual CITY.

I've been taking them around to the more local stuff, downtown, German Village, etc, and they are really starting to appreciate what I love so much about Columbus. Schmidt's is currently on their must-have-that list. :)

I often wonder this myself. I ask myself how cqn you settle for a condo in Columbus when you have the time warner center in nyc? How can you settle for brooks brothers when there is kiton? All of you are settling unless your entire life is dedicated to the pursuit of money because having 100's of millions is the only way you arent settling, and even then some still choose to settle (wexner, glimcher, walter, etc%

Damn right.

I don't get up there as much as I used to, but they're one of the few places in town where I can regularly find rabbit ( outside of the back yard, of course ), really good sausages, pig parts of every kind... delicious stuff.

One time Rockmastermike and I visited my parents back in Philly. They picked us up at the airport and excitedly told us that we were driving through the part of town that's all chain restaurants (think Stringtown Road) and we should pick one for dinner. They were shocked when we looked at each other and explained that it had been so long since we'd been to any chain that we had no idea what to suggest. Now that they've visited here a few more times, they understand and demand Bono and Jeni's upon arrival.

I agree with Brant, and I think (what you are defining as) mediocrity is also the path of least resistance. These places that come to mind most easily for your average TV-lovin' American consumer have a lot more marketing dollars to be able to advertise in various ways to a wider audience. They tend to have larger buildings in more locations: making them easier to spot from your car on your way to/from work/school. People with families and tight budgets tend to feel that they have enough to worry about and plan as is; they don't want to make the (perceived) "commitment" to finding and trying cool new local places in areas they may not frequent. They follow their daily routine and don't ask questions, or don't follow up on uncommon recommendations... typically.

There are a lot of people working to change these traits in the next generation of the average consumer, changing the culture, trying to cater to people with more time and interest in pursuing local businesses, and providing the support those businesses need to thrive. I commend those people - they have a tough job.

And once Bono and Jeni's are on every exit, they will be
mediocre as well. Its about quality and personal taste, not coolness, overpriced places with attitude.
