I suppose they're automated so it takes little effort to send them, but how much return on investment can there be from crap like that? Is it something about gaming google search results by having links pointing to their sites, regardless of whether anyone ever follows those links?

I suppose they're automated so it takes little effort to send them, but how much return on investment can there be from crap like that? Is it something about gaming google search results by having links pointing to their sites, regardless of whether anyone ever follows those links? They do it in an attempt to rise in Google's search rankings for search terms called "long tail searches". Less competitive search queries to rank for. It's why you always see the words highlighted as the hyperlink (anchor text). For example Dating For Seniors. These terms highlighted with the links back to their site can have value and are still the largest factor in determining how a site ranks in the search engine results.
With enough websites ranking in the search engine results they can make a lot of money, which is why they do it. Ironically a lot of the sites the spammers make money with are websites specifically designed to get you to click on a Google text ad (Adsense for publishers) that is on their sites.
To see this in action Google "4 Slice Toaster". You'll see the site below about 4 or 5 down from the top search results.
http://4-slice-toasters-online.com/
See all those Google text ads at the top. If you click on one of those ads the site owner makes a little change. It all adds up. In this case, the words "4 slice toaster" are Googled about 40,000 times a month. The site above will get about 10% of that traffic. 4,000 unique visitors and about 400 to 600 clicks with that shitty site design.
Also, you can see most of the backlinks (270 total) or in this case forum/ blog spam linking to the 4 slice toaster site here. If you visit the sites that are linking to the 4 slice toaster site you'll see most of the links are garbage.
Google has had two big updates to their algorithm (Farmer Update) over the last few weeks in an attempt to squash some of this, but the update was mostly aimed at content farms. Shitty websites like eHow that produce mediocre content specifically designed to rank high in the search results.
Regardless of what Google does I think search will be broken for a long time.
