Thanks, Lindsey, for doing this article.

Can we start having some conversation around a Columbus hostel? It seems only to make sense. I met an Australian guy at a hostel in San Antonio that said he chose the east coast and a southern cross continental route because there were no hostels across our area. Tapping into the awesome backpacking / touring world would add so much to Columbus culture.

What do you think would be the benefit of having a hostel in town?

Maybe because we are all so warm and friendly to traveling strangers we let them stay in our homes!!!

The local chapter of Hostelling International is very interested in hearing your thoughts on getting a new hostel in Columbus. We have two investors that are working with Nationals to bring the Columbus hostel back. Use this forum to post your thoughts or you could attend a board meeting. If interested in attending a board meeting, send me a private message and I will give you the address and time. Come out on 2/13 from 3-6pm at Studio 35 to meet other people in Columbus that support hostels. We are showing a film about a man who traveled around the world using hostels. Hostelling International provides budget lodging but our main mission is travel education.

I stayed there on my first visit to Columbus in the mid 90's. It has been closed for quite sometime. I think anyone out of their early 20's would have felt pretty uncomfortable there.

I think that the original op's article is dead on. The perfect place for a hostel is somewhere in Weinland Park.

Any examples of privately funded hostels working as a business? I would love to find out more on how to invest in something like that. I don't know much about them myself having never stayed in one but I certainly like the idea of Columbus having a place for travelers to stay while passing through the city.

I'd like to learn about examples of privately funded vs. publicly funded hostels as well, and specifically how it works here in the States. I worked the front desk of a small independently owned hostel for several months while traveling and have been promoting the use of hostels since, but am not sure what it would take to get one back in Columbus and what kind would be best.

Wonderland could be a great hostel site - at least based on the location and the draw of staying at a place where there's lots going on.

blackemmapeel - can you give us any more info about what the requirements are for an HI hostel?

I decided to go back to the drawing board and find a way to make a Columbus Hostel a possibility with less capital required upfront. I decided to convert the home I already own in the University District into a hostel. Some paint, elbow grease, and a few trips to Ikea later and The Wayfaring Buckeye Hostel opened the second week of August this year. The response has been unbelievably good as bookings are very steady and well above what my research projected. I currently only have a six bed dormitory available, but I will be adding a private room with a queen bed in the near future. If things continue to be as successful as they have been I foresee the need to move to a bigger place in the future
