Honda Acura NSX Sports Car Will be Built in Central Ohio

Honda to build new Acura NSX sports car at new central Ohio plant

DETROIT – Honda will build its new Acura NSX sports car at a new plant in central Ohio, the company said today. The specific location and the number of employees will be part of a future announcement. The NSX, a revival of a model Acura produced from 1990 to 2005, will likely go on sale in 2015.

I had a contract assignment up there for about 14 months. During that time they had an NSX reunion with cars from many states. There were some nicely modded ones on display, those must be great track cars.

I also happened to be there for the 10th Honda Homecoming, that was an annual event where Goldwings and other Honda bikes converge on the plant. They'd close one of the big parking lots and host the event in it, several thousand people.

Honda has been a terrific asset for the state of Ohio. I have a few family members that work at Honda and even when times are slow, they manage to try to find ways to keep the staff working by offering them to come to work and clean and paint the factory, update computers, etc. They really do care for their employees, which I think makes for a pretty good product. If you must buy a car, a Honda is a pretty darn good choice, and it supports Ohio.

One quirk: the time clock had a standard digital display, but it printed in hundreths of an hour, not minutes. There was a window of time at the beginning of my shift where the display said 7:00 but it printed 7:01 on my card. So I'd be docked for the first quarter hour; might as well go back to the cafeteria and have another cup of coffee.

Honda has taken a beating recently. I've always liked Hondas, but their new models have been really lackluster (probably more a problem of high expectations) and they've been hit pretty hard with the earthquake and flood fallout. I hope they can turn around their bad fortune from the last year or two, but I think it's going to be really hard with newer automakers like Hyundai and Kia coming out with really nice cars that undercut Honda price-wise and the US automakers delivering vastly better cars in the last 2 years. I'd guess the new NSX will be an effort to put a shine on their image.
We have a new Honda, and I have to say it's just OK - it really doesn't measure up to what they used to sell.

I'm just bummed they nixed the Element line, but this gives me hope they'll bring it back before I need a new one.

The Element is the bomb. I am also bummed they nixed that line, and live with the hope they'll bring it back, even in a retooled version.

I hope Honda can get it together. Both the quality and design of recent cars has really slipped, and I would no longer recommend most Honda products to people because there are so many better choices.

Although a halo car is nice, they really need to put resources into making the Civic a leader again rather than the current back of the pack model. The current Accord is dated as well, and many owners have complained about very un-Honda like reliability problems on their 1 or 2 year old cars. For Central Ohio's sake, they can't go down the path of arrogance and denial, lest they end up losing more customers and having to lay off people.

If they can bring back the NSX, my guess is when enough of the current Element owners start reaching the end of the useful lifespan of their vehicles, they'll consider making some more.

I think their problem was they satisfied the entire niche of market that wanted a pretty perfect truck/suv crossover and because most people will get almost 7-12 good years out of them, they had few buyers left. The market for Elements grew real fast, and then suddenly collapsed. Sort of indicating to me everyone who really wanted one, got one.

The project I was assigned to was a modernization of their manufacturing planning. At that time (1998) some of their planning input was obtained through, no kidding, ballpoints and clipboards. They had a 6-month turn-around time for production changes. They spoke of the "sea of green" unsold cars in the factory lot - they were making them and customers weren't ordering them, so there they sat. And they had to keep cranking them out according to plan until the production change orders came through.

I don't know what ever happened to that project after I left, they seemed to be very hush-hush.

That's amusing since I spent the early 90s learning how to copy the Japanese implementation of just-in-time manufacturing.

About time Honda/Acura brings back a true sports car to their lineup. With the death of the Acura RSX and Honda S2000, this is much needed good news. Now Honda just needs to bring the Type R line of models back here to the States and I'll be happy.

My mom recently just got a 2012 Honda Civic coupe. I'm quite impressed by it. Not sure what all this talk about Honda being lackluster. I'd say the CR-Z, Fit and both coupe versions of the Civic and Accord are all great cars, styling and performance wise in comparison with the competition. Now Acura on the other hand... ugh, their cars are getting uglier and uglier. Hopefully this new NSX will be the opposite.

Once a month I had to march down to the west security office for a new ID badge. I went from the motorcycle plant, through a connecting wing, and into the main (newer) plant where they built cars. I went along the last part of the production line, where they put in glass and interiors, installed tires, filled fluids, etc.

But at the end of the line they'd fire up the cars and drive them to the inspection area - man you had to watch it trying to cross that area on foot. Like most assembly floors they had marked areas where you were allowed to walk, kind of like crosswalks, but here you did not have the right of way, at least in practice.

I think one of the things that hurt the Element, and really, Honda in general, is how slow they've been to integrate current, known technology into their cars. They are so funny about options - even moreso than Toyota - and the only real way to get some of the options is to custom order. Who wants to custom order, in this day and age, of a bazillion cars to choose from, with so many of them offering ridiculous technology, often cheaper.
