i used quite a bit of different software, mostly, and that's about all i ever really do to make or record music anymore.
for recording, the latest cool thing I've seen is http://www.reaper.fm/
but lately i'm on ubuntu, so i mean, i can do vsti and dx stuff, and even use repear it seems with wine, though still... it is a lot of fun even if it isn't ideal, but it functions well. i'd like to step up to 96k recording at some point.
i've never messed with portastudio things like that picture, though, only digital recording for the last 12 years... since "samplitude"... i did do a 5 song thingy just to see if my latest setup would work back in december, but i haven't messed with anything besides just recording live since then, just using audacity or something... i generally haven't had any good ideas, or at least one i could get behind.
i'd like to buy a large diaphragm condenser mic, but i dunno, most of what i've been doing lately is software or just directly patched acoustic guitar.
i would say if i lack something, it's anything rhythmically interesting (well, that and practice, and good writing), but i dunno... heheh but i get into midi rather thick. I mostly have done like folky stuff, but I do like orchestral type stuff or perhaps acid synth ;p
but I've also gotten into some of the music programming languages out there. i got some python code that'll turn your wii remote into a theramin i've been working on ;p
