There have been a number of psychological experiments that have show differences in the ways the minds of Liberals and Conservatives work. This new study is interesting:

The researchers found that conservatives tend to focus on the face of the person that they are paying attention to, and avoid cues to look to the side. Liberals tend to pay attention to these cues.
Try this little experiment as you spend the holiday with your relatives. Get into a conversation, something non-controversial that you can chat about for a while without conflict. Every once in a while, say every 30 seconds, glance off to the side at something neutral, maybe a bookcase or a picture on the wall. Don't make a big head turning deal out of it, just a brief side glance.
Notice how the person you are talking to attends to this side glance. If this study is correct, you should see a difference in the way your liberal and conservative relatives reacts, with much more following your glance to the side from the liberals.
Something you can try without taking time away from other Christmas traditions, and if you are asked what you are doing (only the liberals should notice) explain that this is SCIENCE!
