2 ex-mayors pleased by city’s growth

Columbus mayors were focused on building a major-league city — in sports and otherwise — during the growth of the 1980s and ’9 0s. With the city’s bicentennial birthday coming up on Tuesday, The Dispatch caught up with the two living ex-mayors to talk about the successes — and misses — from their terms. Dana G. “Buck” Rinehart and Greg Lashutka, both Republicans, talked about efforts to expand the city.

I remember looking out the windows in elementary school and watching the E E Ward guys unload those old voting machines - for those who never saw one firsthand, they were taller and wider than upright pianos, probably heavier as well.

Oldest known home in Columbus: 208 years logged

When you live in the oldest home in Columbus, you get used to the attention. “I’ve seen school buses idling outside, with kids staring out the windows,” said George Ziegler, who for a decade has occupied an astonishing piece of the city’s history.

Columbus Mileposts: Feb. 12, 1969 | Westland Mall’s debut draws crowd

Thousands of shoppers and hundreds of business and civic leaders were on hand at 10 a.m. Feb. 12, 1969, as Westland Mall, the last of three Columbus regional malls developed in the 1960s, opened for business.
