I found this an interesting read about the Dearduff house in Franklinton. Not exactly "urban development" but I find it cool.

The effort got some attention back in April. Anyone know more about where things stand currently?

Interesting. I looked up the house on the auditor website. It is valued at $3900, and the yearly taxes are $75. The same guy has owned it since 1978.

500 grand on one house in Franklinton seems...well...crazy. I think you could redevelop like 6 city blocks for that.

This is a really important building... one of the last remnants of Columbus' settlement history. Log cabin, one of the oldest (if not the oldest) in the county.
The major issue has been that the foundation logs have been damaged. Fixing that is difficult.

Reading the article about the Deardurff House reminded me about the above article which I had stumbled upon a few months back. I was very surprised it was the same owner. I find it commendable that he values historical preservation.

You have a point Core, no doubt about it... I guess you have to ask, when do you let go of the past to build a future??? I've seen some redevelopment be an absolute waste of money. Not saying this would be. Personally, I think there is value in preserving the past. It's about investing it the history of the area. That could bring some attention to Franklinton if we turned this into a historical landmark. I could be wrong but thats my logic on this. Thoughts?

I was hoping you would jump in Sweeny. :-). You're absolutely right. Thats why I struggle with investing into this house. I hate to see a historical structure go away but how can you ignore the fact that 500k is a hell of a lot of money that could be used to improve Franklinton as a whole. You're right... just sucks I guess. I was thinking maybe by turning this into some kind of landmark more people would pay attention to the area. Not sure if that would be the case or not.

Ironically I detoured through Franklinton the other day just to see the oldest house in Columbus. Checked out some of the other old houses and buildings in the area too. So it's brought one person to Franklinton to check out the landmark already. Sure, you can have three new houses but it's a draw. I also think the first step to fixing up your neighborhood is taking care of what you've already got. And having a 1804 cabin that survived the 1913 flood and everything else that's been thrown at that part of town is pretty cool in my book. If that were in my neighborhood I'd be all for fixing it up.

I don't see it as an either/or proposition. Now if the same amount of money was also secured to renovate facades of commercial buildings on W Broad that would be really nice. Maybe they're historical enough to receive a special designation for funding?
