Pam recollects her memories of the Bean Dinners held at the Westgate Park through her many fond memories as an organizer of this community dinner. The Bean Dinner is a tradition that stretches back to the Civil War, and Pam tells the story of how local businesses and community organizations kept the tradition alive to celebrate the diversity and character of the Hilltop neighborhood. The Hilltop Story project started in 2009 and is a collaboration between the O.S.U. Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing (CSTW) director Dickie Selfe, Loring Resler, Aaron Knochel and Hilltop community centers such as the Hilltop Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library, the J. Ashburn Jr. Youth Center, and is supported by a grant from the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) program. The project aims to collect and archive digitized storytelling events of the local histories and vibrant stories of Hilltop residents and community workers.
