Not a place I would ever ride. Yikes.
Hilliard has a tuesday night ride every week that goes through this area;
also on saturday mornings Columbus outdoor pursuits has a hilliard ride that goes from Hayden run to plain city.
I used to work in this area and the traffic isn't all that bad for cyclists/motorists. One guy used to ride is bike to work most days.
Based on the map I looked it, it doesn't seem all that bad.
Yes, but its in Hilliard. Columbusite thinks the suburbs are filled with cousin marrying hayseeds.
Awful. How is the cyclist doing?
Secondhand information from some within the community:
Cyclist is Steve Barbour in critical condition/coma. Driver arrested for aggravated vehicular assault and there is a possibility alcohol was involved.
yeah, i grew up in hilliard and NOTHING around cemetery road is okay to ride a bike on, unless you're doing it at 4am. it hasn't been safe to ride a bike down cemetery road since like 1986.

This was @ around 6 am. Roads would be safer if basic courtesy and respect were given to all.
Driver is being held in Franklin County jail pending investigation.
On one hand, I feel bad for the bike rider. I've no idea who's at fault in this situation, but sucks to be him.
On the other, while driving on fishinger today there was a cyclist. At least a good 80lbs over weight. In spandex. I was behind this guy for a bit; kinda looked like a few fat, sweaty pigs were trying to fight their way out of a hefty trash bag.
I could go a long time without seeing that again.

At least he was on a bike, not behind a keyboard bashing someone trying to cut a pound or two...

Dono, He might have July in the bag..
@Andrew - Could be alcohol or a cell phone.
A 2003 Harvard study estimated that cellphone distractions caused 2,600 traffic deaths every year, and 330,000 accidents that result in moderate or severe injuries.
Has anyone seen an update on this?
Did he survive? And did they ever post his name?
I didn't see an article on the dispatch website (this seems to be par for the course).
Steve Barbour is a cherished member and ride leader of Columbus Outdoor Pursuits (www.outdoor-pursuits.org). He is an exceptional long-distance cyclist who bikes out to the start of 60+ mile rides. For example, he bikes from his UA home to starting points such as Newark (90 miles round trip) and Clear Creek Metro Park (100 mile round trip), and adds the mapped route of 60-70 miles to his commute. He also bikes to the start of Hilly Hundred in Bloomington, IN (230 miles one-way). Everyone who knows him is impressed by his dedication to cycling and his gentle, soft-spoken nature. Here's wishing him a full recovery from such a devastating crash.
