So, this is something I've been thinking about lately, and wanted to ask everyone: What are some of your hidden favorite places in Columbus? I'm thinking of places that are probably *duh* well-knowns to seasoned Columbus-ites, but are great finds to show off to visitors. Or maybe things that a Columbus regular might pass every day without noticing, or would never think to explore on their own. The unique, one-off places that are located in older buildings, on side streets, or are so small you might never notice them...
Some of my favorites:
Yeah, Me Too - my favorite coffee in town; it's so tiny. I seriously couldn't find it the first time I went looking for it. When I walked in, Jovan just held up a cup and said, "Is this the right size, kid?" Awesome.
Jack & Benny's - yeah, everyone knows about it, but it's easy to pass by without noticing it. I love the old building and the local color.
Studio 35 - it's easy to pass this place off as a simple second-run theatre, but once you get inside and see the beer selection, plus the charm of the place... and it's brand-new digital sound system... and the variety of events they hold there... well, it's my favorite place to see a movie in town.
Benevolence Cafe - a tiny building tucked on a side street next to North Market. Really cozy for sipping soup during the winter.
Paul Robinett's candle shop - okay, so I'm biased towards this place b/c I work there from time to time, but I love how it's a one-off shop, the whole operation is crowded into one tiny room, it's off the main drag in Short North, easy to pass by. I work every Gallery Hop, because I love watching people discover the place.
So those are just some of my thoughts... and they're mostly restaurants, I'm noticing now. But what are some of the other hidden favorites around town: restaurants, cafes, shops, parks, hang-outs, etc.?
I've often thought it'd be fun to write a book or pamphlet or article simply titled "Hidden Columbus," and to feature places like these. Or maybe it's already been done? You tell me.
