Help with our puppy

So, we got a 16 week old schnoodle on saturday. He was immediately lethargic. I mean he passed out on me for the entire 2 hour car ride home. He mostly lays around looking depressed. We took him to the vet as soon as we got into town. She basically said there is no way to tell if it's anything serious or just stress. He kept being the same and started throwing up (though only after we gave him his wormer so we think that is related) so we took him back to the vet. She gave him a water hump and that perked him up immediately. He's been playing since we got him home from the vet yesterday but still isn't drinking and we're worried if it's dehydration it will happen again. All I can find online are "yahoo answers" and I don't really trust those.
Anyone have any tips on how to make a puppy drink?

yep
Put it in the corner of his mouth, pretty deep in, and just keep doing it. I had to do this with my last Shih Tzu sometimes.

p.s. if you end up wanting a second opinion, see Dr. Sears at Great Southern Animal Hospital. Best vet in town.

Even at 16 weeks? We got him from a "rescue." I use the quotes because they seem really sketchy and I am worried he was treated pretty badly for the first couple of months of his life. So I do have my suspicions he was taken from his mother too early.

absolutely on the eye dropper TT, just fill it with water and squirt it into the corner of it's mouth.

p.s. as ridiculous as it sounds TT, you may also try a variety of plates/bowls/etc. for the water and have the dog watch you fill them.
Bugsy won't drink water that's been in the bowl for longer than an hour and will only drink out of clear plastic bowls.
he's insane though, but worth a try.

I second everything Core said. Dr. Sears is an amazing vet. Kirby hates going, but he really took to the doc and his staff. I would also try the bowl thing. My dog won't drink or eat out of plastic. He likes ceramic-like materials only. Those canine critters sure are strange.

We had the same issue with our pup when we brought him home last November. He may or may not be a Schnoodle, too (from a shelter). He wouldn't eat or drink and was very lethargic. It turned out that he had kennel cough, which sometimes doesn't include coughing. The vet put him on an antibiotic, and he ended up being fine. It took about a week for him to get back to 100% though. Kennel cough is kind of like the flu. Lots of symptoms (not all of which are present all the time), very contagious and takes a while to recover from.
He's never been a big eater and normally doesn't drink all that much water either. When he was a pup, he wouldn't eat unless we soaked his dry food with water or mixed it with canned dog food.

I'd get him on some antibiotics and force the water on the little guy. I think you will see him pep up quick. Some breeds are just a little calmer also (i.e. all breeds other than terriers.)

Yeah we also have a "Schnoodle," I think. Our vet already preemptively wrote us a prescription for antibiotics to pick up this afternoon to try and knock anything out of him. We are pretty sure he has kennel cough. At least he is terrified of all other animals right now, so we don't need to worry he will pass it on.

I've yet to find a dog who doesn't get bouts of the nasty poops...this stuff cures it INSTANTLY and I always keep some in the fridge. Apparently it also makes them feel much much better when the tummy is upset.

I just wanted to say good luck with your puppy. Keep us informed of how he's doing?
Since I got my guy as an adult in good health, I don't have too much to add to the pup discussion. However, I can endorse the tummy meds that Core recommends: he gave Charlie some when he was sick a couple months ago, and it worked a treat. Wished I had some recently when the poop fairy came a-visitin' :)

Any update today on how the pup is doing?
Core...thanks for the tip on that digestive stuff. I have a coworker whose dog always has tummy troubles. I passed the link on to her and she's ordering some today. My little fat bastard dog on the other hand has a cast iron stomach. He once ate a good deal of the remains of bf's hot pepper chicken leftovers with not so much as a fart or hiccup. Go figure.

He is definitly lazy. He chews a little. He just sort of gets in to something for a couple of minutes and goes and lays down. He is much better with Niki than he is with me. A couple of growling biting fits but nothing that I would think is out of the ordinary for a puppy. Still regurgitating a bit and still terrified of everything. I hope we are just overreacting as first time dog owners and he is okay. He's had two vet trips and a third trip to the vet with out him for meds already in 4 days.

One reason for the growling/fear could be that his eyes aren't fully developed yet and he can't make sense of his surroundings. My wife is an optometrist, so I'm privy to some nerdy eye info. If you see a green reflex (like red eye, only green or blue) in photos, then it could mean he's not seeing great yet. And that will change. Ours was terrified of going up and down stairs (he had to be carried and would growl the whole time) until his eyes developed. Now he's a stair-romping maniac.

We are also a little worried he is a Griffin. The "rescue" we got him from seemed pretty shady. I don't even know what we would do if we found out he was a Griffin and not a Schnoodle. Size is obviously a big factor as we live in an apartment and spend most of our time in a little store so 20 lbs v. 50 lbs. is a big difference. It makes so much sense about why he doesn't look like most other schnoodles and is already over twice his expected body weight at 16 weeks. Anyone who is more versed in dog breeds than I am if you could check the pic on my blog.

Do you have a crate or kennel for him? Sometimes with frightened dogs, it helps for them to have their own "den" to hide in. I used to have a real wackjob of a rescue dog and he would retreat there when he was really nervous. Also, I wouldn't be surprised with a schnoodle if he turns out to be a different size that you anticipated. I hate to say it, but mixes like schnoodles and puggles and whatnot are really just glorified designer "mutts" or mixed breed dogs and genetic variations could be endless. He is more wiry haired than most schnoodles I've seen, but he's darn cute.
