Thanks for posting this, Chris! Should be a great event.
Any thoughts on what we'll find at the bottom of the pond, after all of the water has been drained?
Could be interesting...Posted 1 year ago # -
I know there is some broken glass in there on which my friend nearly sliced his toes off.

More information about this event in our news: http://www.friendsofgoodalepark.org/news.asp?doc=ptp_announcement.html
The Friends of Goodale Park are excited to announce the first step in construction of the new Goodale Park Fountain: a "Pull the Plug" event on October 3, 2010 to begin draining the pond in preparation for construction. Actual construction should start by the end of October or early November.
Everyone from the Short North community -- and beyond -- is invited to join the Friends of Goodale Park at the Goodale Park pond for the "Pull the Plug" event on Sunday, October 3rd from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. This will be a family-friendly circus festival event that will include various performances, music, a dog costume contest, a pet parade, activities for children, and lots of other surprises. Marshall McPeek from Channel 4 will serve as Ring Master for the event.
The commission, competitively awarded to Columbus-based artist Malcolm Cochran, is inspired by significant historical research. "I was inspired by the Park's history, its naturalized condition, and a waterfall rather than a fountain concept. I wanted it to be viewed in the round and I wanted it to be just as appealing in the summer as it would be in the winter," Cochran said.
The Friends of Goodale Park President, Stan Sells is delighted "that the new water feature takes its cue from the historic Circus House" situated at the corner of Buttles and Dennison Avenues. "We've been planning this since 2004 and we haven't given up. We're very close to end of the campaign but on Sunday we're looking forward to one thing: celebrating the community and beginning the installation of the Fountain," Sells stated.

At first I thought this was going to be about pulling the plug on the Family Circus comic.

I'll go if there is a really a big pink plug at the bottom of the pond with a chain attached to it!

Anybody know what's going to happen to the lily pads? I heard that they might be removed since they're an exotic species. But every out-of-town visitor I've taken through the park in late summer loves them ("they're HUGE!" is a common exclamation), and I kind of like them, too.

We are not saving the water lilies, and I'm not certain if we'll plant news ones. It's believed the lotus, however, may re-establish themselves without any intervention (wanted or not).
BTW - The fish are being saved and relocated to other bodies of water - which I think is pretty cool.

Update on the waterlilies and lotus: I have received confirmation that the Friends will be replacing the waterlilies. We do not intend to replace the lotus (but again, the concern is that they may come back anyway).
