are you trying to advocate using that thing as a telephone? im sure it has other wonderful functions... but really...
oh! hrmm... that's a good point... just have "one" device... i really just want a portable shell prompt ;p but the iphone would be also doubly net connected *plus* a phone... hrmmm... but then i have factor in trying to get out my current service contract enslavement.
Ive had a 4G EeePC for about 2 months, I like it. Doesn't the iphone automatically mean yet another service contract enslavement?
are you thinking about getting the 9" version?
that's the one that can do the 1024 native width? that would be a big plus... and with an ipony i'd have to "zoom in" whereas this thing would be cool with it

yes, yes!
Interesting.
When closed up it looks like a large Nintendo DS. ;)
I take mine everywhere, fits in my messenger bag without taking up much space normally used for paying cargo, even fits in the front pocket.
My only real gripe is it uses a one of a kind kernel and the madwifi kernel modules are specific to it, at least they were when it was released, this is no longer the case, the new updated ones that give 100% function to the wifi can be inserted now without changing anything else. ASUS released it just a wee bit prematurely. Backtrack3 works flawlessly from a usb stick though, they actually beat ASUS to the punch. I think I will be ditching xandros in favor of slackware on it soon. I'm finding xandros kinda constrictive, I am not much of a fan of pre-compiled apps and single user versions of linux. Other than that, for being a tiny little box it is quite versatile. Makes a great WEP cracker/security box, wireless router, plays movies, music, prettymuch anything just as long as you can live with 630Mhz and a somewhat slow disk drive system compared to a desktop or newer sata drive laptop.
holy crap! what a response... does messenger service come with a site security analysis, er, that is, even if i didn't ask for one? ;p j/k
actually thats really really great info regarding the madwifi support, and general kernal module hell. i have to admit, i've wimped out and just run ubuntu on my regular stuff... and i hear that you can do ubuntu on these, but its also great to get some first-hand insight into the distro hackery, so thank you very very much.
i guess i'm perpetually anti-purchase or something. your right for that price i could probably get just a regular low-end laptop. with an iphone, i just pull it out and flip around with a thumb or two... er... how thumbable or one-hand typing friendly is this? hrmm... you mention it still sort of needs a bag to hold it
one hand typing won't be happening, two hand typing on it takes some getting used to actually, the keyboard is small and the keys are almost all the same size, even the shift and enter/return key---you do get used to it pretty quick though, hint, use a logitech usb travel mouse, works much better than a touchpad
I do legal work mostly, some basic deliveries but mostly legal work, its nice to be able to whip that thing out sometimes and access the net to track someone down or access a court website. Downtown, wifi access legal or otherwise is pretty much everywhere.
I have another laptop, a dell vostro, it works well enough(im on it now), it big and heavy though and the battery doesn't last but like 90 mins under heavy usage, I get 3hrs plus out of the EeePC no matter what I do with it.
The biggest selling point for me is it works with linux and the thing really is portable in every sense of the word, many laptops do not do this very well, my dell has an ati graphics chipset and a broadcomm wifi chipset, neither of which work well with linux yet.
As far as security goes, you wouldn't believe how many insecure sites are out there, I have a law firm right across the street with unsecured wifi, I should probably say something to them about it. I have from time to time been known to fix some of my clients computer issues, lots of really bad IT firms out there too I have found. The wifi in the EeePC has good reception too, I can pick up sites my dell won't, about 20-30% better range give or take. So far just downtown I have found enough WEP secured wifi sites that it would take me a couple days to go visit them all personally and tell them to fix their problems. Here's a classic situation, the management company office at city center mall, plain WEP security, what a joke. Don't these fools know this can be cracked in 10 minutes from almost anywhere?
I've had my iPhone now since August and love it. Typing is very easy on it, with some getting use to. And now that AT&T is offering free wifi to all (AT&T) iphone users for free at Starbucks and Barnes & Noble, even better! And once July rolls around, you won't need to jailbreak your phone to get apps on it, which will/can bring it even closer to the functions of a full service pc. If it had flash support, I'd be completely set.
PS- if you're thinking of an iPhone, I'd wait until July when the rumored 3G version comes out.

+1. that's when the blackberry 9k is rumored to be coming out too. and it's practically a 3g iphone with qwerty.
but then again, i might just wait until the fall for android to drop...
... duplicate post
wow! thank you all for your input... good points such that a) there will always be something cooler and b) each sort of has its pros and cons...
i think you'd still have to "jailbreak" 'cause i hear the official SDK rather sucks, and maybe has some weird restrictions? i'm not sure...
as far as security stuff goes, while i'm derailing my own thread... at least they are using WEP... i mean even though it isn't effective, it shows that they at least tried to think about security hehe...
and then, since it is always all mostly security THEATER anyway, i'll pass along the tip I just heard... if you change your laptop brower's user agent to that of the IPhone, you too can get free wifi at those places :D (edit: i guess you still need a valid iphone phone number for it to check maybe)
i do look forward to future things... i dunno... its just when i was on BBSs i always thought it'd be cool to have a small thing that'd get me on them, but mostly i've never brought myself to buying some whiz bang gizmo 'cause it'll be obsolete sooner, but that's true of any machine or device really.
so, the EEE is definately more portable than a laptop, but still a fairly real machine... the iphone is incredibly cool, but then you're locked into whatever deal or app that's available... maybe i should just get an ipod touch, then, get my wifi ssh session going and all the coolness that entails... $250 is what i'm seeing for the basic one of those, and an iphone starts at an $100 more, while these EEE things I'd probably want to go for the $600 one there since that's the 1024 one... but i could get the $300 2gig eee, but then i'm still paying $50 over the ipod touch, and then i still have to set it up like i want...
hrmmm decisions, decisions... heheh thank you all so much for your input
I'd really hold out until June 9th. Apple always uses it's WWDC event to unveil new products and update old ones. Even if you're going with the iPod Touch, they may do something like double the storage capacity. You can always play the wait and see game, but Apple is pretty reliable about throwing some great new things out there at WWDC.
