yeah this sucks... oh well, at least they're not getting rid of on the media, tal, atc, and countless other gems
As long as National Native News with Antonia Gonzalez is still on from 7:01-7:03, I'll be happy!!! (she's way better than Tia James Tafoya ever was.)
This is sad news. I always appreciated News and Notes and its ability to really tell a balanced story. Guess I should have donated some money...

This American Life is PRI, not NPR.
doh!
Sorry to hear about the staff cuts but those are two out of the six shows that guarantee me turning to WCRS or Itunes. You start talkin' about cutting American Routes, This American Life, The Splendid Table, Whad' Ya Know, Roots 'N Offshoots or Morning Edition then I'll run for my checkbook and gun. I'll actually send you more money to get rid of all the BBC (I dislike the Brits), Echoes, Hearts of Space and The Travis Smiley Show.
Edit: I see This American Life if PRI. Ira Glass rocks my socks off so glad that is safe.

PRI is probably in the same financial straits as NPR, but as I understand it, This American Life is a pretty good fundraiser, so I don't think it's going anywhere.

I love the BBC and I think that's a "cheap filler" for them, since WOSU uses it to fill time overnight. The BBC, NHK-radio Japan, Deutsche Welle
, and Radio Netherlands are some of the best international news sources available on non-subscription radio. Radio Taiwan is good too, but less known for news. Radio Canada used to be good, but is not reliable anymore mostly for technical reasons. Other NPR FM stations play some of the others. We only get BBC. Oh well.
I do NOT like the splendid table. Not exactly sure why, but that show gets on my nerves.
Mercurius wrote I'll actually send you more money to get rid of Echoes, Hearts of Space and The Travis Smiley Show.
I'm right there with you. Tavis Smiley's voice melts off my skin for some reason. The NPR music shows are usually terrible. They get the leeway to be esoteric enough because they don't have to appeal to more than 15,000 people nationwide.

I urge you to open up your bitter heart. Lynne Rossett Kasper is wonderful. I met her when she was at the North Market and there is something so warm and comforting about her. I love that show.

I am deeply wounded.

Do you ever listen to The World Cafe? I've never heard a native flute or drum like you'd expect from the crappy name. It's actually really good. They usually have guests that I actually want to hear interviewed and do a good job of playing more than just buzz singles.
"Shakin It" on the other hand is a program I would pay to have cut.

I agree. World Cafe is good, and I also like Afro Pop Worldwide. Shakin It is dreck. The promo gives me the willies.
hungrywoolf wroteOh, I've met some very warm and kind English but comparatively less than just about every other place I've visited (including Scotland and Wales.) There was also another formative experience involving a girl that I'm sure clouds my judgment. It's been my experience that the English see their propriety as superior to ours and there is no better example of that then listening to the BBC.Mercurius wrote I'll actually send you more money to get rid of all the BBC (I dislike the Brits),I am deeply wounded.
Now, not to digress... I've never listened to Shakin' It, but the promos make me cringe.

hahaha…I've never had people be more politely rude to me than in London! :D
i really really really like the world cafe, i'm glad wcbe brought it back to its full two hours.
i heard more about this topic in general on NPR tonight, seems it is the general economy that has gotten them down, specifically the big money that flows their way from various corporations and endowments has seen a hit itself? so perhaps when things come back around, they'll be back.
i also really liked news & notes... when around here it supplanted tavis i was sort of peeved, but its pretty good. i've cracked up several times over views expressed on that show when i thought perhaps i was the only one that felt that way heheh like bad movie directors, etc

They aren't NPR shows but rather WCBE shows, but I think Ante Meridiem (really terrible host) and The Global Village (really wonderful host) are fantastic music programs.
I'd say WCBE is easily the best radio station on the Columbus dial.
And Merc, I wonder if misstating "Travis Smiley" was an intentional dig?

World Cafe isn't out of WCBE but from WXPN (University of Pennsylvania's station). My musical tastes were forever changed by finding this station when I was in high school. I don't know why I don't listen to the online version these days, but it's GOOD.

Yeah, NPR and public radio is heavily funded by corporations and government. Its has a huge price tag as opposed to community radio that relies mostly on volunteerism, personal donations, and local business and organization sponsorships. NPR shows are pretty expensive to air for stations like CBE. WCBE is the Columbus Board of Education's radio station, yet I don' think they have any programs featuring, produced by, or intended for school children from the district!?

I thought it was funny (ironic? strange? I need a better word choice!) listening to the NPR reporter report on how other NPR reporters were being laid off.
It is dissapointing that they have to cut back and now I too feel guilty about not donating. Oh well.
Cyclist, what is your radio station channel number?
