I'm going to start by saying I have done my best to avoid offending anyone, and apologize if anyone takes anything I'm about to say personally.
If I could snap my fingers and give everyone in the world healthcare, I would. I would LOVE to see everyone receive the care they need. But if I could snap my fingers and make things happen, I would wish people wouldnt get sick or injured in the first place.
Unfortunately we dont live in a world where that can happen. The money has to come from somewhere. The government? Yes. But the only money the government has is the money it takes from us. Government entities are notoriously wasteful. It is the equivalent of taking your money, and giving it back to you with a 70% handling fee.
The programs mentioned above, including medicare, and medicaid, are rife with fraud. Something that might be a surprise to many people is that by most estimates, Medicare fraud is at least a $60 Billion racket, some estimates going as high as $74 Billion. In addition, none of those organizations are bastions of efficiency to begin with. Similarly, consider the ramifications of a system under which not only do you receive more incentive under welfare for having more children, but also a situation where just one more parental responsibility is usurped by government.
The "State Children's Health Insurance Program" mentioned earlier must refer to the programs of states including Massachussetts, Tennessee, Oregon, Maine (which is on a whole different level) and Hawaii. It strikes me as ironic that these examples of universal childrens' coverage that were cited went bankrupt, Hawaii's particularly cancelled only 7 months after its creation, when children were dropped from coverage by their families so that they could receive the "free" care to which they were entitled. Also telling is the fact that Hawaii's hospitals have been bankrupted, with an operating deficit for the last 9 years, by the many "healthcare initiatives" their legislature has passed. In addition, rationing of care is regular and systematic, and it is rare that one is able to obtain a physician of their choosing. Doctors regularly take up and leave from states where some form of universalized healthcare is enacted.
The most frightening thing about the proposed system is the fact that under a system where the government can determine which treatments are medically necessary, and under a system where the sole use of authorized force is given to the same party, the government has the ability to tell you "take your medicine and like it" - or perhaps worse, the opposite - by bayonet.
I could go on for days about why the entire bill is an attempt at a power/money grab by washington politicians supported by well-meaning idealogoues. There is a reason certain people in washington want a 2000 page bill passed as quickly as possible, and its not because they want you to be well-informed about the contents, and its not because they think you're a swell guy or gal. They hope you buy the story they present about "helping you fight for your RIGHT to universal healthcare" while they are busy stuffing their pockets with your money. It's a widely held belief (some would say truth) that the higher the stakes, the fiercer the struggle. And from what I understand, this is going to become a $3,000,000,000,000 pot.
That being said, I have great respect for, and admire the conviction of any in attendence at the event, I support your right to assemble for your cause :)
