Ok, I bought a new 1080p set this week. I had previously had an old ass samsung hdtv that only did 1080i and not 720p, it wasnt even 16:9. hdtv with 4:3 and only 1080i, pretty crappy. i had had the hdtv cable box before, and decided with no 16:9 i didnt like it, so i went back to regular digital. anyway, i finally decided to anty up and get a new set. bought 1 of those sharp aquos sets. basically first thing i watched were the ncaa games yesterday, and frankly i was not impressed. are teh quality of these games representative of the over all quality of hdtv broadcasts? maybe i have horrible eyes, which i do, but it didnt seem all that great. anyone who is knowledgable about this id like your opinion. i was thinking of buying the xbox 360 hd-dvd player but if over the air broadcasts seem marginally better than sdtv, then id assume hd-dvds cant look that much better than regular dvds. comments?

flip back and forth between a regular broadcast and an HD broadcast. If you can't tell the HUGE differnce go see an eye doctor.

No television network broadcasts in 1080p as of right now.

Sounds like you might need laser surgery to enjoy your new set. From wikipedia:
Wikipedia wrote Ability of the eye to see 1080p
In order to see a benefit from 1080p content a display must be bigger than usual or the viewing distance needs to be closer than usual. The ability of the eye to resolve 1080p content depends on the amount of contrast in the picture. For optimum viewing of resolution you need to sit back 3 times the viewing height [7] [8]. For example at nine feet away you need at least a 46 inch display to see a benefit from 1080p or for optimum viewing of resolution you need a 70 inch display.

Make sure you get the right cables. The 360 HD-DVD player only does 1080p with VGA cables. Through component cables it only supports up to 1080i.
Honestly though, if your eyesight isn't the best anyway, I think it would be hard to really differentiate between 1080i and 1080p without doing a side-by-side comparison. You shouldn't expect a highly noticible difference in quality between the two, even when you are actually viewing a 1080p video.
Congrats on the new TV though. You'll be well prepared for when the time comes when you can utilize that high-resolution display on a regular basis.

yea, i know nothing is broadcast in 1080p, i think i just added that in just to be a braggart. i wasnt aware about xbox not doing 1080p through component though, i bought the def jam game, and it is the first game i own that is 1080p, havent played it on 1080p, but i will see today.
i am not sure what my eyesight is now, but when i was younger i think it was 20/200, lol maybe 20/300 or something (i had to wear a patch for 2 years), i know it improved since then but if i close my left eye i cant see shit out of my right. left eye btw is perfect.
now, here is what is pissing me off, any help would be GREATLY appreciated with this issue.
so, i am using 360, and lets say i put in gears of war, which is 1080i and 720p. so i change the output of the 360 to 720p, now when i do this and either reset or turn off the console, when it comes back on, there is a line through the middle of the screen, and after of maybe 1 hour of play, it freezes. it is so strange because it does not do this when putting it on 720p for cable, nor does it do it on 1080i on 360. i took back my 360 and obtained a new one, and i brought back my tv, and got a new one. still not fixed? any of you guys know what it could be? frankly i dont see a huge difference in 1080i and 720p but i mean if i just dropped this kind of money on something, i want everything to work. is it something with sharps working with the 360? been thinking of taking it back and getting a samsung, as those must work being that they are on display everywhere with the 360s.
so geniuses, i need some ideas here.

I take it you're giving up standard definition tv for lent?

I've got a 360, but I've not done a whole lot of switching back and forth between video modes, so I'm not sure what this specific problem would be.
I'd say your best bet would be to google for similar issues being reported, or post the question on a site specifically for xbox360 issues. There's loads of them out there.

Your post is a bit confusing, but if you don't have an HD cable box, you won't get HD signals from your digital box. You can always do OTA and get those that are broadcast free.
So were you watching SDTV from you digital cable box or HDTV OTA?

I too, am somewhat confused by your situation. If this is your second HD set, you'll know when it's HD or SD, as I'm sure you do. You won't see any difference in picture from your old 1080i set to your new 1080p with current broadcasts. So I'd recommend trying to get OTA channels to test if you're getting the signal. For the sets I've seen, the OTA HD channels are different than analog, so WBNS is actually 10-1, not 10. So that's another thing to make sure.
All that said, the CBS coverage has been somewhat unsteady, with constant switching between HD and SD games, and prolonged periods of SD for games being recorded in HD... So unfortunately it's probably not the best test for proper set-up. One way to be sure is HD will always be 16:9 and SD 4:3 unstretched. If your receiver is receiving the 5.1 signal, it will recognize it as Dolby Digital. An SD audio signal won't be recognized as such.
Hope something in there is helpful :). As for the lines on XBOX, can't help you there :(
