Anyone know what the deal is? The entrance has been closed off for construction for a few weeks now. I checked the website for Columbus Parks and Rec but couldn't find anything about it. Any guesses when it'll be complete?

Work Type: Alteration
Hayden Falls Park Improvements, 150' Boardwalk, Steel Stairway Installation With Wood Decking, Railing, Wood and Concrete Observation DecksThe boardwalk, staircase, and observation plarforms are already done. The current work is related to the "Reservoir Pollution Reduction Project" currently underway at severel sites at Griggs, Hoover and Oshay. Here's a description of the work from the draft design/feasability report from 6/30/09:
4.2.13 Site 12: Griggs – Hayden Run Nature Preserve
Description: The site is located in a busy area along the south side of Hayden Run Road just across the river from Riverside Drive. The site contains a parking lot, has a new boardwalk, and is a good educational location. More construction is planned in the future to extend the existing boardwalk to connect with the west boardwalk.
Basis of Selection: This site was selected due to its high visibility from Hayden Run Road and because it’s located in such a busy area. The existing parking area has limited parking spaces
and is not well marked. The parking lot is deteriorated and needs a controlled, better defined entrance / exit.
Potential Issues: The potential for a right in / right out only entrance and exit to parking lot is not likely to be popular.
Proposed GI BMP Solutions: Solutions proposed for the Hayden Run Nature Preserve at Griggs Reservoir include reconfiguration of the existing parking area to increase parking capacity, directing runoff from the parking lot to a vegetated filter strip, directing runoff from the vegetated strip to a bioretention facility, and providing an energy dissipater for flow exiting the bioretention facility prior to its outlet into the reservoir.Posted 1 year ago # -
More from the same document, regarding Oshay:
4.3 O’SHAUGHNESSY RESERVOIR SITES
4.3.1 Site 13: O’Shaughnessy Reservoir – B
Description: This highly visible site is located on the south side of Glick Road, on the west bank of the Scioto River, immediately downstream of the O’Shaughnessy Dam.
Basis of Selection: This site was selected due to the desire to make the site a welcoming setting and a showcase GI project. An entry feature, walking paths, and educational features are desired at the site. The existing gravel parking lot is undefined and erodes and drains directly over the bank to the river. Uncontrolled parking impacts trees within the drip line. Parking needs to be moved away from the edge of the bank and a buffer area restored.
Potential Issues: Steep slopes and trees will inhibit the grading and location of water quality facilities.
Proposed GI BMP Solutions: Proposed solutions to O’Shaughnessy Reservoir Area B include the installation of vegetated swales to treat runoff from the access drive. It is also proposed to remove much of the existing parking area and replace it with a cul-de-sac style parking lot. This would allow for 30 parking spaces (including 2 handicapped spaces), the ability for park visitors to turn around. It also would create an ideal location for a bioretention facility in the center of the parking lot. It is also proposed to relocate the picnic tables to one area, allowing the majority of the open areas to be converted to “no-mow†areas. These improvements will provide an area to showcase various pervious pavement types and plaques describing their purpose.

Interesting. So is the park not closed, just the parking lot off Hayden Run? Did you find anything regarding a completion date?

It looks like they just closed the whole place off to keep people out of their hair. I don't know the expected completion date. You can still get to the observation decks but there's no place nearby to park.
You could also get in by water, I don't think there's any work going on in the bottom.

A few weeks ago my almost 2 year old saw a waterfall on Dora the Explorer and was very curious about them, so I decided to drive her over to Hayden Falls to see a real one. I had been telling her how exciting it would be to see, so she was really looking forward to it. Unfortunately, it was closed when we drove past and we couldn't go. She was pretty upset about it, and I was dreading the car ride home, but then as we were driving down Riverside drive we passed that building with the little waterfall landscape feature and she says "I see it, Mommy, I see it!" with such enthusiasm that I just went with it. She still talks about it. I'm looking forward to the falls opening again so she can REALLY see a waterfall. It will probably blow her little toddler mind!

Kids that age live in a dream world.
Have you gone to the Indian Run Falls park in old downtown Dublin? It has multiple waterfalls and safe/easy trails. At Hayden, you'll have to go down (and up) a rather long staircase.

Great suggestion. I didn't know about that one. Thanks.

Also consider Scioto Park with the big Leatherlips sculpture. It has springs and the riverbank, plus a decent playground. Lots of ducks and geese.

Wow, looks like a trip to Dublin is in order. And I can't believe I didn't know about that sculpture after living in Columbus for 10 years. Thanks.

The lot at Hayden Falls is open again, it's very lush down in the gorge.

I went yesterday; it's nice that it's more organized and the ducks aren't phased by humans looming above them on the boardwalk.
