Hawaiian Wedding

Has anyone on here gotten married in Hawaii? My fiancee and I have decided to skip town and get married there. I've begun contacting many of the resorts and hotels there to see what sort of packages they offer and I'm really surprised. We are planning something for just the two of us, a very simple and casual ceremony. The proposals that I've received so far range from $1,500 to $8,000+. For just the ceremony. With only two people. I didn't expect it to be cheap but this is a little ridiculous.

Now I'm looking into just staying somewhere down there and finding someone outside of the hotel/resort we stay at to take us out on the beach and marry us. But all the websites that I've found look shady as hell.

So if anyone else on here has done a Hawaiian wedding, I would love to hear your thoughts and recommendations.

Anyone can get ordained to be a minister online and legally marry you. It's super easy (we did it that way - just had a friend do the official marriage stuff). Maybe you could pay for a friend's plane ticket, and in exchange he/she could marry the two of you? Would be cheaper than $8K!

Depends on what you're looking for though.

Everything about Hawaii is very expensive. That's why stuff in the Caribbean is much more popular.

(or so a wedding person told me)

I think it depends on where you're going in Hawaii. Oahu & Maui = Expensive.

Motorist... have you already picked out hotels and locations and such? Anne & I went to The Big Island for our honeymoon and found that a lot of things are relatively cheap there. Might be worth looking into services in either Hilo or Kona-Kailua instad of anything near Honolulu.

Depends on what you're looking for though.

You know - we tried this with friends who got married on a mountain in VA. And discovered that different states have different rules about such things, and you pretty much have to jump through some huge hoops in VA that make it pretty much impossible to do the 'married by a friend' thing. It was surprising.

We haven't picked a hotel yet. We were hoping to find a package deal for a wedding and honeymoon but it looks like it isn't going to happen that way. We are currently looking at Kauai, Maui, and Oahu. But I'm open to other suggestions.

When we started planning our wedding here in Columbus, we were going to have my sister marry us. Ohio makes it really easy. However, it's not really a vacation if we have family hanging around.

Vestanpance, I've found that everything gets really expensive once you put the word wedding in front of it.

My wife is from Hawaii and we were married in 2007 at the Turtle Bay Resort which is on the North Shore of Oahu. Having stayed at a ton of different resorts (Four Seasons, Ritz ect) on multiple islands, I can highly recommend Turtle Bay. Their location is amazing as it is right at the most northern tip of Oahu and centrally located to some of the most amazing beaches. They are also very reasonably priced, think 3 star resort in a 5 star location.

As far a the wedding, Hawaii has some tight laws about who can marry you. Our friend who performed the ceremony was ordained on line and this was not acceptable to Hawaii, but my brother in law who is a commercial boat captain in Hawaii was able to sign the marraige license.

While we had a pretty extravagant wedding, I could get you the name of our wedding coordinator and you can see if she can put something simple together for you that would meet your time frame and budget. She was awesome and handled a ton of stuff for us prior to the wedding. Plus has her own company and is not aligned with any one resort so she can work to get you the best pricing.

BTW, I will be on Kauai for three weeks in June, if you need anything checked out.

hah! for sure. I got married last Nov. so I can feel your pain. Someone told me (maybe on CU) to ask for a "white formal event cake" and not a wedding cake. Will save you $100s hehe
