I saw the preview for it last night and it looked amazing. It's the first time I have ever seen a preview and said I need to see this movie. Tomorrow! Is it a let down?

Tigertree wrote Woah, that was a good movie.
The scene that shows his "studio" on the weight bench, tape recording hanging from bench bar and like a casio and mic or whatever really struck a chord with me. Very inspiring.

It was just all so unbelievable. I can't believe he still lives with his folks. I think his mom seemed at least a little responsible for pushing him over. I have to say that "Glass Eye" chick was obnoxious. Every segment she had to bring up the band she used to be in.
I guess my huge interest in the movie is how influential he apparently was to so much of the music that is important to me, and I some how missed his existence until now. I remember hearing an NPR interview with Jolie Holland (who is a total hack/fraud but that's beside the point) talking about how she was on tour playing ukulele in the back of the van when she heard Paper Moon for the first time. At the time I was thinking "are you f****ing serious? How are you a musician in your genre and you've never heard that song? I guess it's possible for obvious things to slip through the cracks sometimes.
It's also the idea that he is crazy enough to be honest and in music the worst voice can be beautiful if it's honest.

A great companion piece to this film would be the documentary, "You're Gonna Miss Me" about Roky Erickson. Erickson is a psych-rock legend. He's most widely known for his leading role in The 13th Floor Elevators (you might know them from their song "Your Gonna Miss Me"'s inclusion in the opening scene of the movie High Fidelity). However, he has had an an off-and-on solo career since that band that has been, at times, spectacular (try the songs "I Think of Demons", "Don't Shake Me Lucifer", or "If You Have Ghosts" for starters). Erickson is also from Texas and has also suffered from his fair share of mental demons along with family and legal troubles. Anyway, it's a good film as well.

I will definitely check it out! Thanks. I have been looking for some Rhapsody exploration today anyway.
A really bad movie, by the way, in the same line is Half Japanese. Partly because they blow, and partly because the movie was just long without much of a story. It was like, hey, check out these ugly guys that make bad music and became friends with some people who make really good music.
