Last ditch try at getting our floor repaired.

When we pulled up the carpeting from the previous owner we found some obscene sentiments carved into the hardwood floor. The worst being a hearty F**K YOU carved in about 6 inch letters.

I tried removing the poly with mineral spirits and steel wool. Then re-coating the area. But the carvings (upgraded from what I thought were just scratches) haven't gotten any less noticeable. They actually go through the poly and into the wood.

The words have been covered by an area rug, but I will be selling my home soon. I can't in good conscience leave that little surprise for the next owners. If I can't get it out I'll leave money in escrow as a percentage of refinishing the first floor.
But I'd rather have it gone or at least not noticeable.

Any ideas?

PS If anyone is looking for a place in GV. I'll be signing a real estate contract in about a week. If they buy it now, I'll cut the price by 8%

How thick is the wood? Is it engineered or actual hardwood, or is it laminate?

Would getting it professionally sanded down and resurfaced be an option?

Plenty thick. It's a 1863 house.
Just worried about sanding down one spot. wouldn't look right and would leave a noticable depression unless I did the whole room and then I would have to do the whole first floor since the rooms are all hardwood

Are you able/willing to replace the damages boards? Our neighbor was able to replace damaged, individual "slats" with new(er) ones.

Write the problem really super tiny or in bad hand writing on the residential property disclosure, go ahead and show the property as it is with the damage covered up, maybe someone will write on the property without noticing it on the disclosure.

Have you tried a wood filler or putty perhaps? I would not fill in just the word but I would try to blend it with a section of floor then stain it. Like Sand, Fill, Blend Obviously you would want to test an area first but itÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s worth a shot if you have no other options that are affordable.

If the resurfacers do a good job, doing one room shouldn't make that big of a difference compared to the rest of the floor unless they'd have to go really, really deep. If the damage is that bad, I'd agree with the idea of trying to replace that section of the floor, instead.

Have the offending plank(s) pulled up, flipped over and sanded/stained to match. Fuck the basement instead.

It's almost impossible to make the wood filler look like the floor - especially old floor. Then the letters would show up as a differing texture than the rest of the floor, and likely look even more obvious.

(I tried to fill a spot on my floor when refinishing - even tried to draw grain lines on the spot to blend it, then stain it - it looks like filler.)

Caveat - if you don't want to do any of the above thoughts (the best being to flip the boards), you could sand, fill & paint the floor.

How deep is it? If not too deep, carefully tape off (for protection) the surrounding boards with some good thick tape, and sound down the offending boards only. Stain to match and lots of poly to build back up. Doesn't have to be perfect since you're doing a particular board or few boards. The natural variation between boards will cover it up.

Or remove the boards and replace with some from a closet. It's easy to patch in sections of boards if you don't want to do the whole thing. You can replace what you take up in a closet with something modern. No one will see it.

Or remove rug and let everyone see. Then nothing hidden. Let next owner deal with. :)

ETA: we had an awesome realtor who was able to spend the hours before the closing from the walk through getting quotes and ended up with a chunk of change in escrow (oooo, the shithead's wife did NOT like that) we used to make needed repairs.
