Bill for concealed guns in bars advances in state Senate

Despite strong objections from law enforcement, a Senate committee approved a bill yesterday that would allow Ohioans to carry concealed weapons into bars and restaurants - provided they don't drink.

The Senate is expected to act quickly on the legislation, voting as early as today, according to Senate Judiciary Chairman Timothy J. Grendell, R-Chesterland. A Senate spokesman downplayed the possibility of an immediate vote, however.

It's coming regardless. It's just a matter of when. Anyways, yeah, guns in bars is a pressing matter.

Apparently these legislators have never seen the old Western movies and tv shows where everyone in the bar is carrying a gun. Invariably, the hapless bartender, on orders from either the sheriff or the local boss, refuses to serve some guy. Somebody always ends up dead. Gives a whole new meaning to "I'll have a beer and a shot."

I'll never understand this stuff. A party spends a whole year campaigning on tax policy, spending cuts, and otherwise making Ohio more business friendly, and after the election it's time to crush unions, do the heartbeat bill, and let people take their guns into bars. Dishonest, and a complete waste of time.

Also, a question: I know businesses often stick a "no guns" sign in the front window. Do bar owners retain the right to ban guns in their business voluntarily?

I donÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t know why but this is rather scary. I know there are super responsible gun owners and carriers out there so please donÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t be offended. But drunk people with guns are scary, I say this not as a generalization but as someone who has seen it a million times. So IÃ¢â‚¬â„¢m not sure this is going to end well.

If this law were to pass, then yes they as private property owners would still retain that right.

Not a huge fan of drunks, with or without guns, but not so worried about this law.

Figure if someone is going to go through the trouble of taking the requisite class, filling out the application, passing the background check and paying for all of that they're making an effort to comply with the law.

If that's the case, then why wouldn't they comply with this law as well?

As far as I know, yes.

If they campaigned on what they really believe in, certainly no plurality of voters would let them anywhere near legislation, hence the smokescreen of dishonesty.

Personally, I won't be happy until Little Timmy can pack his full-auto Glock 11 with extended clip in his backpack with his Star Wars lunchbox when he goes off to preschool. Better safe than sorry, cuz you never know when you're gonna have to cap that lil' bitch Annie who's always tagging you on the playground...

Has there been a rash of in-bar stabbings requiring legislative intervention that I missed? I saw the one...I'm not sure that qualifies as a trend though.

p.s. If the reason is, however, legally allowing folks to bring guns to knife fights I can't see how this could possibly end badly...

Allowing guns in bars as long as people don't drink? How is a bartender going to know this? Concealed carry permits allow you to carry a concealed weapon, and I imagine that most people would forget to mention it to the bartender.

Or maybe some bars will start offering free soda or coffee to dedicated shooters the way some do to designated drivers?

Or maybe we will simply require that people carrying in bars carry their guns openly? Not a fan of that, either; if we're going to have people carrying arms openly, it ought to be swords. Much classier.
