As a someone who came of age in the 80s, I find these lists (like on the 80s thread) and the reactions to them endlessly fascinating. Most of the songs on there ... well, I'd have ditched a girl who listened to them. Or stomped a guy. It is most intriguing what persists and what appeals to later sensibilities.
Not criticizing, just ... fascinated.

First off, I'd be very interested in your mix. Please consider doing one.
There's a few reasons I like this mix
1. Jack does a good job of track selection. I'd probably not pick many of these tracks on my own mix, but they're interesting enough, he lines them up well and as a whole, they're pretty representative of what was getting played at my high school dances. Unlike you I don't consider the songs horrible (except for eddy money), but just throwaway dance pop from the 80s (that in the end aren't that bad).
2. I've loosened up considerably since I was 17. I'm far less concerned who sees me dancing like an idiot or what anyone else thinks is "cool". Thank fucking god!
3. I started listening to jazz, funk, techno and house. This clued me into good production and drumbeats. True story.. I couldn't stand Michael Jackson when his albums were huge. Especially when I started listening to techno in the mid 90s, I noticed that I loved the sound of some MJ songs, most notably the ones with Quincy Jones's hands on them.
4. I've learned to tune out lyrics.. this helps a lot.
