The CBC Restaurant has always filled any growler, regardless of label. I reckon it's because they are an entity separate from the brewery. Perhaps they simply don't care. I've even seen them fill the oddly-shaped Russian River growler.

It was my understanding that it is different at each brewery/brewpub. Some breweries want their beer in their growlers simply to maintain true brand recognition.

I'm guessing this is the case, too. Thirsty Dog fills Great Lakes growlers all the time here. If Barley's refuses to fill others' growlers, I'm gussing it's by choice, not by law.

The Ohio Division of Liquor Control has assured me that it is not illegal for a brewery/bar to fill a growler from somewhere else.

OK, one other thing - some places shrink-wrap the growler caps, some don't. Where does Ohio law come down on this, in regards to "open containers" - is some sort of seal required? I doubt that I could get pulled over with a nearly-full growler with no seal, and say they only filled it partway.
Dang, imagine chugging a growler while driving a stickshift in the city. It has probably been done.

Exactly, and makes complete sense. I've even heard of some breweries filling empty milk gallon containers, not that I would recommend that. :)
Although, I have seen some people bring in growlers to be filled with various things growing in the bottom. It is generally considered a good thing to rinse and maybe sanitize your growlers when you are finished.

Will you always trade a growler for a growler? That's a cool idea - I didn't realize you guys did it. That's what Buckeye Lake does, too.

We selected a growler of the Scottish and left our real and screen names at the bar to let you know all was well. That ale vanished rather rapidly but was so satisfying. The staff was very pleasant about it.

The Scottish is always reliable, but I never know what seasonal brews might be on tap. It's fun to bring home something intense like one of the porters, and make a project of it with a friend or two.
And, no trash, the bottle waits for its next use.
