I would like to take some growlers of local brews to a family gathering on the east coast this weekend. I have five empties. Any suggestions on where and what to fill them up with so I can present a good sampling?

Gordon Biersch has good beer. I really like the Hefeweizen, and a lot of people like Maerzen.

But honestly, you can't go wrong with a growler from CBC, especially the Columbus IPA.

FWIW Gordon Biersch is California-based and isn't local per se. If you're going for local CBC and Barley's are the main go-to's. Elevator is also an option, their Dark Horse Lager is somewhat popular in Columbus.

Actually, a surprising number of what I used to consider regular (though generally somewhat more upscale) supermarkets have growler filling options now (though of course not all of the offerings will be local brews). The Whole Foods nearest where I live up here in northeast Ohio has growlers and taps, as does the West Point Market here in Akron.
If any of the local places with taps and off-site licenses in Ohio have Great Lakes or Thirsty Dog brews, I recommend them--almost all of their offerings are good, and they're at least Ohio brews, if not Columbus-area.

I wish I liked Gordon Biersch beer, but I don't.
Barley's is great, as is CBC. Other places worth checking out that'll fill a growler: Barrel and Bottle in the North Market, Whole Foods, maybe Elevator. Not sure about that last one though.

Gordon Biersch beer is brewed in the arena district (I used to work there), as well as it is a chain. And if there is a place where I can get a growler of Great Lakes (Eliot Ness pref), let me know!

Zauber Brewery on Norton (between 3rd and 5th in 5XNW) has growlers of their Belgian style.

Keith at Gordon Biersch is doing a great job, as did Chris before him ( who left to go to Fat Heads production facility), and Eric before him (who ended up buying CBC). In addition to Zauber, Four String, a few blocks north, is filling growlers with interesting beer. The newly remodeled Studio 35 has a lot of taps and fills growlers, too. And I think somebody already mentioned Barley's (insert winking emoticon).
ETA; mrl & I were writing about Four String at the same time. Coincidence?

related question - how long does beer in a growler stay fresh when it is:
a. unopened

They are certainly best fresh, but I've kept them refrigerated for months with excellent results, unless it leaked and went flat. Opened, they go flat in a day or two... An argument in favor of growlers is freshness. Assuming the keg or serving tank is fresh, the beer is as fresh as can be.

I've never been able to keep mine refrigerated more than a couple of weeks without losing some quality. Maybe mine don't seal tightly enough to keep them for months.
I'm with 0Angle on how fast they need to be consumed after opening, though--you've got maybe two days. I generally only open them when I've got a friend (or more than one) to share with.

I have kept a growler of Barley's Christmas Ale until the summertime. The key is to get and keep the cap real tight, I will also wrap some electrical tape around it as an added caution. I stick it in the back of the fridge and forget about it.
It's pretty cool to open a fresh growler of Christmas Ale mid summer and it still be as fresh as it was in December.Posted 1 year ago # -
The Bicentennial IPA from Barley's (smokehouse) is absolutely amazing if you like hoppy beers. I've been going through a growler or two a week (but Barley's will NOT let you fill a non-Barley's growler, FYI)

One thing, though, the last I heard was that a brewery cannot fill a growler with another brewery's label.

The inconvenience of having to wait for a fill rather than just grabbing something off the shelf can be off putting.
