Some idiots toppled the new fountain at the Greystone last night around 2:30am - 3:00am. If you have any information you should contact the management company (614) 294-6097‎ and/ or the police.

Dammit, I can't tell you how mad that makes me. I hope they somehow catch them, it seems like someone must have seen something from a courtyard window, that had to make a sound.

I talked to Nancy about it this morning and she heard it and thought it was a car accident. So far, nobody seems to know anything.
This kind of shit happens everywhere of course, but for whatever reason it seems like we get a surplus of drunken idiots that trash the neighborhood week after week. I won't even waste much thought on counting on law enforcement to manage the street. They don't. This takes the cake though, this is just a nasty, malicious act.

I thought the students were home for the summer :-p
Completely outrageous.. I'm all for some heavier patrolling *if* that will cut down on this sort of shit... Any other thoughts on what could be done?

As in some areas Downtown, Franklinton, and recently the Hilltop. They have the Safety patrols who walk around. I'm sure the short north could gather up enough volunteers to walk around overnight for a 4 hour shift or something from mid-5, 1-5? or some short but problem time frame.
Just a thought. The greystone could always make the courtyard gated security access code for tennants only or put a camera up.
Just curious the ebiza lot across the street claims to have cameras up, wonder if they picked up the vandalls? Oh the ebiza tennants may have witnessed this if oh wait it's not done yet! my bad.Posted 2 years ago # -

Just a thought.I was considering that..
As an aside, Does Grandview Mercentile still have the issues with broken windows?

Maybe Vinchen did it, that way it would be a political statement rather than vandalism ;)
Seriously though, what would possess someone to do something like this is beyond me. We have a lot of problems with the park across the street being tagged every couple of weeks. The city, and sometimes neighbors will go out an clean or repaint, but it's right back up there in a couple of days. Personally, I have no problem with people caught doing this receiving a little vigilante justice.

I walked by there around 2:15AM last night and didn't see anything. Kinda pissed I didn't walk by there later.

A neighborhood patrol would still be a great idea.

Suckitude is a given, but some of the late night damage is done by people who think that stuff would look good in their home. Maybe they thought that the statuary would be simple to steal, but found out it was too heavy to move after it was knocked down?

I really can't believe that the SN doesn't have a block watch kind of thing happening. Seems like folks there can organize for everything except their own safety. I think citizen patrols of the SN, especially around High would be great. We can't rely on the police for prevention, just enforcement if anyone is seen or caught. And I'm not talking about vigilante groups pr anything, just more eyes on teh street.

I already suggested that back when there was that knife-wielding robber, but as usual I have nothing to contribute.

With Video cameras everywhere these days, I'm sure the vandals are on video near or around the area. Would just take some investigative work by the police department.

They scheduled a first meeting for this week (tomorrow I think) and are doing a neighborhood flashlight walk thing. Maybe some people could check that out and take the intitiative to bring it across High Street...

This act of vandalism, the countless assaults and personal crimes committed in the Short North signify that our current law enforcement strategy has been and is failing. Something needs to change. More cops patrolling in cars won't change it. More cops just getting out of the car and actually walking the beat in the neighborhood during crime prime time *might* have a huge impact. A neighborhood watch might help, but that would mean response times have to improve when something is reported.
We were up and about early in the neighborhood yesterday morning and had to walk the street. On Park we had two guys combing the street and looking for cars to break into, another guy in the alley was defacing public property and we had some ranting lunatic making a seen on the street. All while, two cops sat in their cars shooting the shit in the Haiku lot. I see that play out in that way pretty much early every Sunday morning when I'm up.

A neighborhood patrol would still be a great idea. There are so many women working in the service industry down in the SN that could really use some extra security when walking home. I'd love to see some comprehensive security options for them as well as property.
I wonder if anyone saw or heard this happen? It had to make a huge noise. Are the original fountain pieces damaged beyond repair?
