NJ transplant here. If you had told me 5 years ago that I'd be happily living in Columbus, and you couldn't pry me out of the town with a crowbar, I'd have said you were crazy.
But I love it here. Good people, good food.
There's only two things you'll miss: NY style pizza made with mozzarella, and take-out Italian. Other than that, I think you'll like it here :)

Wow. Thanks to everybody. I knew posting here was a good idea.
Things I've done so far: I've been up and down the Short North (obviously), I've been in the neighborhood around the OSU campus, though I haven't actually walked through the campus itself, I've been to that really huge bookstore in the German District (which I found out about here!), I've gotten a library card, and last night I went with my roommate and friends to the Wexner Center to see Bone creator Jeff Smith screen and talk about his favorite Looney Toons cartoons. Later today I'm gonna go back there to see the Bone exhibit. I'm also gonna go to the Art Museum today, and I'm looking forward to my first Gallery Hop tomorrow. Job-wise, I'm still looking, but I've got a couple of promising leads.
I admit that the whole lure of Columbus as an art community might've blinded me a little bit, but this site has given me a much clearer picture of the city, and for that I'm grateful.

Welcome to Columbus! I work with 2 guys from Upstate NY...I know it's in a completely different universe than NYC, but they seem to really like it here too.
What part of town did you choose to live in? or did you just pick a place of convenience to live in while you check out the city for the right neighborhood for you?

The Arts Festival is surrounding the Arts Museum this weekend. Might be a pain to park anywhere, but will be well worth your trip down there if you walk around in the festival a bit. :D

I just came back from the CAF and I liked it a lot. Before I went there, though, I walked around in the Art Museum. Didn't have time to see everything, because I got there near closing time, but it looks alright. The CAF was so impressive. I've seen similar art festivals in NYC and this one ranks favorably with all of them.
John, I live in Franklinton right now although my roommate and I are looking to move to Grandview Heights later this summer. I haven't been there yet but he tells me it's a terrific neighborhood. He's a friend who I've known for several years so I trust his judgment.
Turned, my ideal job would be in editing and/or publishing - I was editor of a startup magazine for its first year, though we didn't make any money, and I've done journalistic writing for several websites for longer than that. My field is pop culture, in particular comics (hence the interest in Jeff Smith).
Once I get a regular gig, I'd like to try out the restaurants around here. I've been to a few in the past, but if this place has a rep for good food, then that's something I can't pass up :P

Forgive me for laughing, but it is quite hilarious that you chose the bottoms to live in out of all the areas of Columbus. How did you happen to chose that area? Not that there is anything wrong with it, but for a person just moving to columbus I would never say "oh yea check out living at the corner of West Park and Sullivant, it is one of our great communities called The Bottoms".
Oh yea, if you want to fit in the neighborhood, and not sound like some yuppie that is trying to live in the next cool place do not call it Franklinton, call it the bottoms. No one that lives in the bottoms, says franklinton, that is reserved for CU, and politicians, and what have you.

If you had fun at the Arts Festival, you should enjoy some of the other summer festivals and events in Columbus. Last summer we conducted a survey on CU and tallied up the results to figure out what everyone deemed as the best festivals:

Try Rossi for some pizza close to home. It's close. My folks are from Brooklyn and I had the good fortune to visit often: pizza, egg cream, wise potato chips, hand ball and yoo-hoo made an impact. Oh yeah there were a few cool museums too. Welcome to Columbus!

That's where my roommate happens to live. I was originally gonna just stay with him until I found my own place, but he was gracious enough to let me stay with him permanently. We're planning on leaving there later this summer, though.

Hi! Columbus isn't as walkable, but with a little effort you can make it work in most occasions. I think you'll like Grandview, especially if you're within walking distance of Grandview Ave. It's a great urban strip, there's a couple of very obvious sections that need to be urbanized (as a New Yorker I'm sure they won't miss your sight), but overall much to like. There's a Drexel theatre, couple of coffeeshops, numerous restaurants (more on the $$ side) and I think there's a Mom & Pop grocery store across the street from Giant Eagle at the north end which is still open for now. Like lots of other things in this city, unless you knew it was there you'd pass right by it.
I hear Josie's Pizza is a Westside (Franklinton/The Bottoms & Hilltop (basically everything west of Franklinton to 270) institution and the El Huarache taco stand at Broad and Hague is good. You'll have to go to Tommy's if you haven't already. I'm sure there's plenty more that Westsiders will feel outraged that I forgot to mention.

ratzo, I'm not sure what range your comic interests take, but I thought I'd use this as an opportunity for a little piece of local interest:

Former NY-er here, as well...30 years in Brooklyn. Been in Cols for about 4 years, and I ain't goin' back. I do miss the corner Korean greengrocer, good/cheap pizza, good/cheap Vietnamese food, the subway, and bootleg cd's in Chinatown, but otherwise Columbus has been good to me.

Yesterday I was out with my roommate and other friends and we drove through GH briefly, so I got to see the stretch you're talking about. If we can find a new apartment there I think I'd like it a lot, especially with the Drexel there.

Sounds like you've checked out more in a short time than people I know who have lived here for years. They always complain there is nothing to do here. :roll: Then again, they never venture inside 270. :lol:
