CondÃƒÂ© Nast plans to announce this morning that it will close Gourmet magazine, a magazine of almost biblical status in the food world; it has been published since December 1940.

This is a very dark day in my world :( I love Gourmet - it's about the only magazine I prefer in print format, to take to the coffee shop on a Sunday morning or read on the front porch with a cocktail or peruse while making a grocery list.

Is there anything comparable out there? There seem to be so many food magazines out there for people who can't cook well (Rachael Ray Everyday, Bon Apetit, Everyday Food, etc.) Some of the others are too technical and not sexy, like Gourmet is (Cooks Illustrated.) What can I replace it with?

I've read many different cooking magazines and my favorite is Saveur.

I also enjoy the advertisement free Cook's Illustrated. Edit, didn't read you weren't a fan.

Saveur is awesome I think.

I also like Donna Hay (an Australian mag) for the beautiful layout and photographs (obviously a big influence) and simple ideas. I think Donna Hay is great for beginners because she makes great food out of really simple ingredients; the recipes are well-tested and results are yummy. The magazine is $10, though.

Does anyone know Fine Cooking Magazine? Barbara Fisher (on Tigers and Strawberries) mentions that and Saveur in her post about Gourmet.

I can't understand the injustice of a world in which Gourmet dies and Sandra Fucking Lee's Semi-Home Made contintues its assault against America's collective palate with insipid condensed soup casserole nonsense.

Well, at least I'll have some creative ideas for my tablescapes.

I subscribed to both Gourmet and Bon Appetit for a couple years. I thought Gourmet was an excellent magazine for people who want to read about food, but not necessarily for those of us who have a small kitchen, a limited budget for resources, and generally cook for two people.

As much as I appreciated the essays and photography in Gourmet, I decided to keep BA because the recipes were simply more practical for my wants (as someone who "can't cook well").

Fine Cooking is good; the recipes and info are basic, so it's a good one for beginner cooks.

Actually, if you want a short publication that really teaches you how to cook in a focused way, check out Simple Cooking. Or any of John and Matt Thorne's books, most of which are derived from it, I think.
