Anyone been playing with the latest google maps tool yet? It's only active in 5 cities so far (San Fran, NYC, Miami, Denver, and Vegas) but it allows you to position a camera along certain streets to activate a rotating panoramic view. Pretty wild!
I already looked up the hotel we've booked in San Francisco for our trip to see what else is right around it at street level. ;)

I use MSN Live a lot with its bird's eye view such as this view of the columbus. . .

Yeah, google maps has a top-down satellite view as well.
But this new Street View lets you plop a 3D camera in the middle of Times Square and rotate it around and zoom in and out. :shock:
The only thing Columbus has similar to this is the Panoramas at Retro Metro:

And there are a lot fewer there than what google is starting to provide.

damn. that is sweet. you think they just drove around these cities snapping pictures and indexed them according to GPS? what's next? you map a route and it shows you a real time view? very cool.

funky stuff! I wonter if monster paid to have their van drive around in the shot. Or at least it was in th3e picture where I was looking. By the way walker if you will be there through next friday I will be part of a art show at Space Gallery in san fran.

Google also gives great, detailed directions from Columbus to London. Especially step 15...

I dig the Google Street View stuff, though it's kind of crazy all the massive amounts of off-guard & inappropriate stuff they've already managed to catch on camera, just with what they've gotten so far...

There's people going in & out of strip clubs & adult bookstores, the google mobile speeding, a dude peeing on the side of the road, a crime in progress (possibly?) and so much more...

Interesting to see 360 taken every few feet from a moving vehicle. One thing I notice Paul on retrometro uses a tripod machine creating clear images even at night while Google uses a machine mounted on top of a vehicle creating blurry images even in the afternoon. I can't even get a clear shot of the Las Vegas sign from 10 feet away. :?

the bird's eye thing on msn is actually different from the top-down view you get with google - it is angled, so you see the faces of buildings. definitely worth checking out! and, as was mentioned, they have it for columbus..
